"Worst Spiderman game in a decade."
Spiderman 3 is a game that I really wanted like. I was fan of both the 5th and 6th generation console Spiderman games and have always thought they have done a good job of making you feel like your Spiderman and progressing his abilities to be a more and more faithful recreation of Spiderman. Being Treyarch's 4th crack at the franchise and the first attempt on the newest console generation we were expecting a leap forward. Unfortunately this is not the case as the game has many issues and a complete lack of polish and overall feeling like it was released much sooner than it should have been. And don't blame it being a movie based game because Spiderman 2 was based off the movie and is considered by many the best Spiderman game.
Spiderman 3 is an awful looking game. The animation look fine by themselves but have weird choppy transitions. The character models are also very poorly done. Faces in the cinematics look almost comical and have little recognition to their on screen counterparts. The voice acting does include all the actors from the movie but most of them have poor writing. Not to mention most of them seem bored and is indicative of the little effort put into this game. The city itself is not very well detailed and especially when you get a close look at the textures. But I would say the big city is the best part of the game. Rendering a large area without large amounts of pop in is good feat in of itself. The music is largely taken from the movies as well and is one of the better points of it's presentation.
In a big dynamic action adventure game like Spiderman 3 the controls and camera are very important. The controls do work fine but the combat isn't very complicated either. The controls for movement are also very responsive. Transversing the city is definitely the highlight of the game and the controls will not get in your way enjoying it. The camera on the other hand does have some issues. Especially in combat the camera will often swing wildly into corners obscuring your view. In the boss battles, being cheap already, this can become very frustrating. Also when you turn around a corner while scaling a wall the camera is prone to one of these crazy shifts as well.
The story for Spiderman 3 very loosely follows the movie. Of course to make it make suit the length of a game and add in several other characters quite a bit of delineating plot lines are added. These additions as expected aren't very good plot or story wise and don't into any major cannon either. The movie revolves around black suit Spiderman and was not very good, so don't expect these parts of the game to be interesting either.
Spiderman 3 plays out much like the previous Spiderman games. You play as Spiderman free roaming around a large city picking up various missions whenever you would like, including the main plot missions as well. There are several non mission things to do as well such as; find collectibles, races, and fighting gangs. Including the the main missions there are also gang mission trees to preogress through. There is actually quite a bit of content and you get stronger getting new abilities as you progress. However, there is very little variety. Everything boils down to either the same repetitive combat and mobility challenges of some sort. The combat is very button mashy. There is a light and heavy attack as well as jump and your web attacks. Stringing these together is not very deep and you will quickly just mash buttons to get through combat sections. And you will be doing lot of combat. The boss battles were an opportunity to add some variety to the game but theses are some of the worst parts of the game. The bosses generally have very powerful attacks and simple patterns, but very high health. Beating them is more of a test of patience than skill, the worst type of boss battles... Not to mention the wonky camera will rear it's ugly head often in these situations. Another problem I had with the game was the gang members are way to strong. I mean you supposed to be Spiderman right? So explain to me how billy bob gang member 12 can knock me out? The best parts of the game are exploring and finding the collectibles. The different type of races are fun for while but do get old quickly. I often found myself only able to play this game no more than an hour at time before becoming bored or frustrated.
To complete the game would take about 6 to 7 hours. If you were to complete all the content the game has to offer it would probably top 10 hours worth. I played this while it was new but now it is very cheap and you do get a decent amount of content to do. If you were to complete everything the city basically becomes and empty shell. There is no multiplayer or other modes.
Spiderman 3 is a boring game and the worst Spiderman game over a decade. There are many other Spiderman games out now which means there is no reason pick this one up.
