"Back from the good old days, Paperboy is sure to please."
This game is a classic brought to us by the folks at Midway. It features Xbox-live versus and co-op, as well as the standard arcade mode. The quality of this game is in its nostalgia factor, however, so if you are looking for something groundbreaking and exciting then it move on to something next gen.
This is what boosts paperboy's score, because without game play it wouldn't be a classic, would it? Well, for fans of the Paperboy series there isn't much that has changed. Riding around on your bicycle and throwing papers at the windows of non-subscribers and in the mailboxes of subscribers is the main goal. However, it sounds easier than it is because you have a multitude of enemies and inanimate objects who would just love to make you crash and fail at your duty. Cats, seemingly life-like tires, break dancing black men and dust devils are all things to avoid. Hit detection isn't that great, so expect to have some moments where you just want to give up. Paperboy is easy to learn and hard to master, but is fun when you are looking for nostalgia or a challenge.
The controls are pretty simple, too, using only one button. The aspect at which you control the paperboy is quite odd, almost isometric. In all honesty, this game is basically a port of Atari's own game with a few extra features thrown in like live play and resolution changing on the fly. I have a sneaking suspicion that this will be just an achievement game, with little replay value after you get them all.
The audio and graphics look and sound beautiful on a HDTV and 5.1 sound system, as they have been re-mastered from the original arcade. Obviously, many hours have been put into the sprite artistry by the art leads, and it shows. Every little detail is back, in other words.
At only 400 Microsoft points, its a bargain and should be downloaded regardless if you like to play video games or not. The fun-factor is great, and fans of Paperboy won't be disappointed by this remake. A must have for Xbox Live Arcade users.
