Do the red chests respawn?

My friend told me that they don't, so I haven't been opening them, preferring to wait until the end of the game for when they have better stuff. After seeing how frequently they appear, I began to seriously doubt this was the case, so I opened one. I then exited the area and reentered it, but the chest was empty. So can anyone clarify that they respawn, and if they do, when?

Your friend is incorrect. Red chests do respawn. If you open a red chest, exit your game and enter again, the red chest will be unopened. They do eventually respawn while you are playing too, but it takes a while.
