Negative money in co-op play?

Okay, I thought it was because I died too much. Then I tested it, the money didn't change after I died. First it was stuck at -68, now at lvl 32 its -9120. I play co-op, and my boyfriend has over a million in cash, and has died as many times or more than me. What is the solution?

Found the solution. It was because I was 2nd player. Now after beating the game, and becoming 1st player for play through 2, my money is nearly half a mil. Problem solved...
