Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit

First off a little background on myself in regard to this review: I am an avid Dragonball Z fan and I have played all of the versions of the Budokia and Tenkaichi series. I felt both series progressively got better and better through sequels. Now for my review on Dragonball Z: Burst Limit.
Burst Limit follows the DBZ story line through the completion of the Cell Saga. Fans of the series will know the story well but for those who just picked this up for a fighter, you will find yourself confused during cut scenes. The story provides a general idea of what is going on in relationship to the anime but skimps on the details. Not only this, Burst Limit also excludes important fights and characters from the path a long the way. This is a little annoying as some of the skipped scenes are dealt with through recap movies after completions of sagas that make you want to play them.
Simply, WOW! The shading, clothing, backgrounds, and special effects all look amazing. At times you swear they are parallel to the show, sometimes better. There is a little laziness in the animations though. You will often see the same animation sequences in cut scenes only with different characters. This takes away from the game a little bit and brings the overall experience down a notch. For the most part however, all of the animation runs together fluidly and looks simply amazing. This is by far the best looking DBZ game to date.
Everything is in place and authentic. With the ability to switch the language from English to Japanese many will be pleased. The music is very relative to the menus and battles at hand, but not all tracks are entirely memorable. This is no problem though as the X-BOX 360's lets you customize your own soundtrack through the dashboard menu. Sound effects and voice-overs are all done exceptionally well.
Using the Budokia series as its foundation, Burst Limit introduces new gameplay mechanics into the mix which have a pretty good impact on the way battles are fought. One of these new features is called Drama Pieces. Drama Pieces are un-skippable cut-scenes that activate when certain requirements are met through a battle. These scenes can either offer boost effects to your character or call on a partner for some form of assistance. Admittedly, these scenes do contribute to annoying breaks in the actions sometimes but this can easily be remedied by simply not picking any drama pieces at the start of the battle.
With Numerous difficulty settings, multiple gameplay options, and versus and online versus battle modes, Burst Limit has a lot to keep you fighting. Survival mode, time attack, and points battles offer spins on fighting. For those who yearn to up their high scores these gameplay modes are just what you are looking for. Where it lacks however, is in the area of content. The small number of special features, options, and unlockables are a little upsetting. Unlocking the Drama Pieces does require a little time though. As for myself, I am still working on the last few of these upon writing this review.
Dragonball Z: Burst Limit screams fan service but at the same time also offers a solid fighter. Burst Limit is definitely a next generation game, unfortunately the game feels unfinished and rushed in parts. Both content and features could have been polished to make this a great game. The exclusion of important characters from the series (just in the sagas the game includes a lone) is not acceptable. Especially when they tease you with said individuals in recap videos of the sagas you just played. All in all, Burst Limit holds up as a great addition to the DBZ series and gleams as a step in the right direction.
