      ---------------------------  1.)  The Basics  -----------------------------

    Once you learn an arte, it can be set in the Artes menu.  You can make 4
    primary artes assignments that use the Left Stick + Artes button, and you can
    also scroll down past those to find 4 more shortcuts that can be triggered by
    flicking the Right Stick.
    
    Unlike the primary assignments, the RS shortcuts can be set to an arte from any
    character in your party by using the Left/Right Triggers.  You could use them
    to have access to 8 artes for the character you're controlling, or you could
    use them to order another character to use an arte that could help extend a
    combo, or use a support spell that you don't want the AI to cast on its own.
    
    Artes are learned mainly by leveling; once you reach the required level, it
    will randomly be learned when you take any action in battle, and it will
    immediately be added to your artes list in the menu.  Each character also has
    certain artes that can only be learned through sub-events.  Altered, Burst and
    Mystic Artes work very differently though, and I've given them their own
    sections.
    
    ===============================================================================
    1.1)  Normal Artes
    ===============================================================================
    Most artes in the game fall into these categories.
    
    Base Artes:
     Mostly lower level artes.  By default, base artes are the only kind that can
     be canceled into another form of artes, creating the basic combo of
     regular attacks -> base arte -> arcane arte.
    
    Arcane Artes:
     While most arcane artes are learned by leveling, some are combinations of
     earlier artes and require you to use those artes 50 times each.  For most
     characters, arcane artes can never be canceled outside of Over Limit mode.
    
    Magical Artes:
     Spells are further divided into Novice, Intermediate and Advanced spells, but
     there aren't many technical differences.  A more important distinction is how
     they're targeted.  Single target spells are self-explanatory, and are targeted
     with the D-Pad.  Area spells can be targeted directly at an enemy, or targeted
     manually with the Left Stick.  Linear spells are basically aimed when casting
     starts, which causes them to be less accurate against moving enemies.
    
    
    ===============================================================================
    1.2)  Altered Artes
    ===============================================================================
    New to Tales of Vesperia are skill-Altered Artes.  Each character has access
    to a specific set of skills that can change certain artes; some altered artes
    serve as a direct upgrade to the original, others add an elemental strike, and
    still others just completely change the effect.  Altered artes don't have level
    requirements and vary greatly in terms of effect and TP cost.
    
    When you first use an altered arte, you'll see the zoom effect that normally
    happens when you learn an arte, but it isn't fully learned yet; you'll still
    need the skills equipped to use it.  Once you use an altered arte enough times,
    it will be mastered and added to your menu, able to be set separately from the
    original arte and used without the old skills equipped.
    
    To fully learn altered artes, you need to use them 100 times for physical
    altered artes, or 50 times for altered spells.
    
    
    ===============================================================================
    1.3)  Burst Artes and Mystic Artes
    ===============================================================================
    These artes cannot be set in the menu, and require you to be in Over Limit mode
    to activate them.
    
    Burst Artes:
     These are first learned when you get to Heliord.  While in any level of Over
     Limit, execute anything higher than a base arte or novice spell and hold the
     *Artes* button to activate a burst arte.
    
     Burst artes can be performed multiple times in an Over Limit and they become
     more powerful with higher level Over Limits.  It's also possible to perform
     elemental burst artes with the right skill combinations, but it's never
     possible to master those like with altered artes.
    
    Mystic Artes:
     These require the character to have the "Special" skill equipped.  While in
     a level 3/4 Over Limit, execute anything higher than a base arte or novice
     spell and hold the *Attack* button to activate a Mystic arte, which will end
     the Over Limit.
    
     Most characters learn their Special skill from weapons, but some learn it from
     sub-events.
    
    
    ===============================================================================
    1.4)  Fatal Strikes
    ===============================================================================
    Fatal Strikes are another new feature in Tales of Vesperia, introduced in the
    first dungeon on the second continent.  Fatal Strikes instantly kill regular
    enemies, and provide bonuses such as improved drop rates, more EXP, more LP,
    and status boosts.
    
    
    How to perform a Fatal Strike:
     First, hit the RB to bring up the targeting window.  Beneath the enemy's name,
     you'll see 3 gauges next to blue, green and red arrow symbols.  Every
     offensive arte in the game has one of those symbols next to it, and will drain
     that gauge when used against the enemy.  Regular attacks also drain the gauge
     slightly - up attacks for the blue gauge, forward attacks for green, and down
     attacks for red.  After the gauge is completely drained, using another arte of
     that type will cause the arrow symbol to appear on the enemy, and you can hit
     the Right Trigger to do a Fatal Strike.
    
     If you're having trouble executing them, keep a couple things in mind.  When
     a gauge is getting low, there will be a flash of light with the same color as
     as the low symbol - that is NOT the Fatal Strike opening.  The gauge has to be
     completely drained, and the actual arrow symbol will appear.  If you're seeing
     the arrow symbol but still can't do a Fatal Strike, you're probably hitting
     the Right Trigger too early.  Wait for the symbol to completely form its
     outline; the game is far more forgiving with late Fatal Strikes than early
     ones.
     
    
    Fatal Strike Chains:
     Basically, to do a FS chain, DON'T hit the RT when you see a FS opening.
     After the arrow symbol fades there will be a dark aura around the enemy - if
     you keep hitting that enemy and do another arte/spell to make a symbol appear
     again, then that's a FS Chain.  The more FS symbols you skip while the aura
     persists, the higher your FS Chain.  You don't actually need to keep the enemy
     in a combo (so knockdowns are ok), but if the enemy manages to guard an attack
     or hit you, the dark aura will fade and the FS Chain will reset.
    
     The primary benefit of using FS chains is that they increase the bonus when
     you finally execute a Fatal Strike, for even higher drop rates, more LP, etc.
     There's also a nice grade bonus for FS Chains.
    
    
    Enemy Weaknesses:
     Different types of enemies are more susceptible to certain FS types, and using
     the enemy's weakness can make a dramatic difference in how soon the FS symbol
     appears.
    
     Birds & Bugs: Weak to Red (downward) Fatal Strikes.
     Plants & Aquatics: Weak to Blue (upward) Fatal Strikes.
     Beasts & Magical Enemies: Weak to Green (forward) Fatal Strikes.
     Humans: Equally weak to everything.
     Inorganic and Scaled enemies: Resistant to everything, but higher FS bonuses.

    ===============================================================================
    
    Q: How do I target Estelle's First Aid?
    A: With the D-pad.  The D-pad is also useful for area spells, since it lets you
       quickly move the target across the battlefield.
    
    Q: How do I avoid triggering Over Limits if it uses the D-pad?
    A: Hold the Artes button to delay any spell while you select your target.
    
    Q: What's a good way to grind artes usage totals?
    A: Equip as many characters as possible with Taunt and Taunt 2, give OL Boost
       and Minimum Damage to yourself, set everyone to defend and fight a battle
       against some weak enemies.  Your allies will just taunt constantly, and you
       can use level 1 Over Limits to spam artes.  When you can access Nam Cobanda
       Isle, Limit Bottles are very affordable and can also help speed things up.
    
    Q: Why do some of Rita's spells miss so badly?
    A: Because linear spells are aimed when Rita *starts* casting, unlike single-
       target and area spells.  Some linear spells have limited tracking ability,
       but if the enemy moves much they'll still miss.
    
    Q: Why do all my attacks suddenly do just 1 point of damage?!
    A: You have a weapon with the Minimum Damage skill equipped, or the skill 
       equipped by itself.
    
    Q: How do I stop my combo from being broken when the enemy is knocked down?
    A: There are a variety of artes that can force them to stand back up, but one
       of the best tricks is to just use Yuri's free run attack.
    
    Q: Where do I get X synthesis item for the Altered Artes weapons?
    A: I already thought I was going a little overboard with that section, try
       looking for a monster guide.
    
    Q: Are any artes missable?
    A: Raven's Vanji Lost spell is the only one, as fas as I know.
    
    Q: Where do I get the joke weapons for the joke artes?
    A: From professor Sicily, it's one of the later stages of his side-quest.
    
    Q: Why can't I get certain sub-events to trigger?
    A: Sub-events often require a full party, so just try again a little later.

     Mystic Arte: Yuri gets two weapons with the Special skill, Dein Nomos and
     Second Star, both of which are obtained automatically in the story.
    
    
    
    Sub-Events
    ----------
    Shining Eagle:
     Part of the Dark Enforcer costume side-quest.  When you first arrive at Capua
     Torim, sleep at the inn for an event.  Next, after you get the boat, complete
     the event for learning Tiger Blade.  The last step is to speak to an excited
     couple at the southern end of Nordopolica, and then sleep at the inn there to
     finally learn this.
    
     If you missed the event from sleeping at the Capua Torim inn, the couple will
     never show up. However, it's still possible to learn Shining Eagle by winning
     the 100 man melee with Yuri after gaining the Hunting Blades' invitation.
    
    Tiger Blade:
     Part of the Dark Enforcer costume side-quest.  After you get the boat, go to
     the Royal Quarter in Zaphias and speak to a man named Shel.  Speak to him
     again on the street to the west.  After speaking to him the second time, go
     down to the Public Quarter and speak to a woman on a bench to learn Tiger
     Blade.  I don't believe this part of the side-quest has a prerequisite or a
     deadline.
    
    Final Gale:
     Near the end of the game, just return to Aurnion and speak with Flynn.

     Mystic Arte: Estelle's weapon with the Special skill is the Rod, which is
     found in a chest behind the Giganto monster in Zaude.
    
    
    
    Sub-Events
    ----------
    Astion:
     Late in the game, go to the elder's house in Myorzo and examine the stone slab
     behind the large table for two separate events (the other one being for
     Judith's Sundering Moon).  Afterwards, speak to a Krityan who will either be
     in Aspio or Deidon Hold.
    
    Force Field:
     Part of a side-quest chain in Halure.  Late in the game, after a few events
     from speaking to Halure's elder or kids near the tree, approaching the tree
     will trigger an event where you learn this.

    3.1)  How Artes Improve and Other Secrets
    ===============================================================================
    Waaaaay too many artes have hidden features.  Some are available right away,
    but many more aren't possible until you have a certain number of uses with that
    arte.  Considering this is a big part of the reason I made this guide, I
    thought it would be appropriate to include a summary of all these things.
    
    
    
       Yuri
    ==========
    
    Base Artes
    ----------
    Azure Edge: Becomes faster after 100, 200 and 400 uses.
    
    Destruction Field: Swords bounce the enemy into the air less than axes until
    200 uses.
    
    Shining Fang: Axes will do one less hit than swords until 200 uses.
    
    Ghost Wolf: Difficult to cancel at first, but cancels normally after 100 uses.
    
    Tiger Blade: After 200 uses, the 2nd hit can be canceled into aerial artes.
    
    
    Arcane Artes
    ------------
    Azure Wolf Strike: After 300 uses, you can cancel it before the knockdown.
    
    Dragon Swarm: After 200 uses, the 1st/3rd/5th hits can be canceled by guarding.
    
    Severing Fang: Usable in mid-air after 100 uses.
    
    Brutal Fang: Add more hits by mashing the Attack button.  The max is supposed
    to be 107 hits at 1000 uses.  That's one hundred and seven.
    
    Wailing Havoc: Usable in mid-air after 100 uses.
    
    Shining Eagle: After 300 uses, with the Dark Enforcer title equipped, hold
    Attack at the start to add a 4th hit and down the enemy.
    
    
    Altered Artes
    -------------
    Azure Storm: Becomes faster after 100, 200 and 400 uses.
    
    Azure Blast: With axes or with swords after 200 uses, hitting an already
    downed enemy will cause it to bounce into the air slightly.
    
    Shining Fang Drop: Axes will do one less hit than swords until 200 uses.
    
    Pyre Havoc: Usable in mid-air after 100 uses.
    
    
    
       Estelle
    =============
    
    Base Artes
    ----------
    Pow Hammer: Chance to cause stun increases with usage, up to 100% at 9999 uses.
    
    Star Stroke: Becomes faster after 100, 200 and 400 uses.
    
    Dividing Edge: Usable in mid-air after 100 uses.  After 200 uses, it can be
    executed faster on the ground by only tapping the Artes button, or slower (with
    the old backstep) by holding the Artes button.
    
    
    Arcane Artes
    ------------
    Delight Roll: After 200 uses, you can hold the Attack button to add a 2nd hit.
    
    
    Altered Artes
    -------------
    Air Divide: Same as Dividing Edge.
    
    
    Joke Burst Arte
    ---------------
    Only possible with the Cat Teaser weapon equipped.  Activate any level Over
    Limit, then use an arcane arte and hold Attack + Artes.  The move will go as
    long as you keep the buttons held; move the left stick up and down to hit the
    enemy.
    
    
    
       Repede
    ============
    
    Base Artes
    ----------
    Crescent Fang: After 200 uses, it can be canceled in mid-air.
    
    Punishing Fang: After 200 uses, it does 4 hits and effects a much larger area.
    
    Shadow Fang: After 200 uses, it forces downed enemies to stand.
    
    Demon Dog: Gets faster at 100, 200 and 400 uses.
    
    Shining Dog: After 80 uses, it starts in half the time.  After 150 uses, it
    gains an extra hit at the start.
    
    
    Arcane Artes
    ------------
    Sonic Return: After 200 uses, you can hold down on the left stick to stop
    Repede from jumping away, or hold up to make him jump farther away.
    
    Hell Hound: Usable in mid-air after 100 uses.
    
    Cyclone Shot: Usable in mid-air after 100 uses.
    
    Ghost Wolf: Hit the artes button repeatedly to do more hits.
    
    Shining Fang: Usable in mid-air after 100 uses.  Gains more hits with more
    usage, maxing at 10 hits with 400 uses.
    
    
    Altered Artes
    -------------
    Sonic Fang: As it gains more usage, you can add hits by mashing the Attack
    button.  Maxes at 51 hits with 400 uses.
    
    
    
       Karol
    ===========
    
    Base Artes
    ----------
    Dragon Upper: After 200 uses, it can be canceled in mid-air.
    
    Nice Aid Smash: Area gets slightly larger at 100 and 400 uses.
    
    Nice Recovery Smash: Recovery area gets larger at 100 and 400 uses.
    
    Havoc Break: Usable in mid-air after 100 uses.
    
    Gaia Bug: Gains a third possible attack after obtaining Karolow X from the
    professor Sicily side-quest.
    
    Bug Breath: After gaining Karolow X, doing a charged Bug Breath has a 20%
    chance of attacking with a laser beam instead of the spray.
    
    
    Arcane Artes
    ------------
    Punishing Aid Smash: Healing area gets slightly larger at 100 and 400 uses.
    
    Rending Drop: Usable in mid-air after 100 uses.
    
    
    Altered Artes

    Nice Healing Smash: Area gets slightly larger at 100 and 400 uses.
    
    Nice Curing Smash: Area gets slightly larger at 100 and 400 uses.

    Ideal: Usable in mid-air after 100 uses.
    
    
    Novice Spells
    -------------
    Fire Ball: Adds additional fire balls after 50/200/500 uses, and every 500
    uses after that up to a maximum of 10 fire balls at 3500 uses.
    
    Champagne: Gains a slightly larger effect area every 100 uses, maxing at
    approximately twice its original size with 1000 uses.
    
    
    Intermediate Spells
    -------------------
    Splash: Gains a slightly larger effect area every 100 uses, maxing at
    approximately twice its original size with 1000 uses.
    
    Spiral Flare: The aim slowly improves, able to adjust up to ~45 degrees after
    300 uses.
    
    
    Advanced Spells
    ---------------
    Blade Roll: Rita can move while the blade spins.
    
    
    Altered Spells
    --------------
    Gold Cat: Starting at 100,000 gald, every additional 10,000 gald in your
    possession will add 1 hit.  Effect maxes at 1 million gald.

    ===========
    
    Base Artes
    ----------
    Rain: After 200 uses, hold the Artes button to add a second shot.
    
    Bouquet: Charm duration increases after 200 uses.
    
    Serpent: After 200 uses, the explosion becomes much larger.
    
    Glimmer of Heaven: After 200 uses, the arrow falls much faster and can be
    delayed by holding the Artes button.
    
    Around: After 200 uses, a second hit can be added by hold the Artes button.
    
    Love Shot: Starts with 1 arrow healing 30%.  With 100 uses, it's 2 arrows
    healing 18% each.  With 200 uses, it's 3 arrows healing 15% each.
    
    Dark Chase: Gains 1 extra arrow at 100/200/300 uses.  Usable in mid-air after
    100 uses.
    
    Violet Snake: Becomes Violet Weasel at close range with the Change Style 2
    skill equipped.
    
    
    Arcane Artes
    ------------
    Just Like Dancing: After 200 uses, forces downed enemies to stand.
    
    Cyan Instant: Becomes faster after 200 uses.
    
    Falling: Becomes Flying at close range with the Change Style 2 skill.  Both are
    usable in mid-air after 100 uses.
    
    Azure Heavens: More arrows rain on the enemy with more usage.
    
    Crime: Becomes Punishment at close range with the Change Style 2 skill
    equipped.
    
    The Wind's Howl: Becomes The Wind's Rage at close range with the Change Style 2
    skill equpped.
    
    
    Altered Artes
    -------------
    Rain of Heaven's Tear: Mash the Attack button to add more hits.
    
    
    
       Judith
    ============
    Special Note: All of Judith's artes that are usable in mid-air with the Aerial
    Artes skills can be used *without* the skills after 120-200 uses.  Artes that
    can't be used in mid-air with the skills are simply never usable in the air.
    
    
    Base Artes
    ----------
    Crescent Moon: After 200 uses, hold the Artes button to kick the enemy higher,
    and also make Judith jump higher while in the air.
    
    Moonlight Havoc: After 200 uses, it gains a 3rd hit at extremely close range.
    
    New Moon Blade: After 200 uses, hold Attack to add a second hit that knocks the
    enemy into the air.
    
    Crescent Strike: After 100 uses, it forces downed enemies to stand.
    
    Luna Rise: After 200 uses, use it in mid-air and hold Attack to kick the enemy
    upwards instead of down.
    
    Dawn Moon: After 200 uses, it forces downed enemies to stand.
    
    Moonlight Blast: After 200 uses, hold the Artes button in air to add a second
    hit, or hold the Artes button + Down to add a 3rd hit that kicks the enemy to
    the ground.  
    
    Piercing Moon: After 200 uses, it can be canceled at any point.
    
    
    Arcane Artes
    ------------
    Luna Gale: After 200 uses, the first hit forces downed enemies to stand.
    
    Luna Rondo: Usable on the ground after 100 uses.
    
    Rising Moonlight Havoc: After 200 uses, it sends a shockwave for one more hit.
    
    Thunder Moon Rising: While Judith is spinning up, mash Attack to add a 5th hit.
    After 150 uses, mashing attack can also add a 6th hit.  After 280 uses, another
    hit is added at the start which forces downed enemies to stand.
    
    Moon Glare: Hold Attack + Artes before the first hit to extend the move.
    
    
    Altered Artes
    -------------
    Luna Talon: After 200 uses, it can be canceled at any point while descending.
    
    Moonlight Drop: After 200 uses, it can be canceled after the 2nd hit.
    
    Raging Luna Storm: After 200 uses, hold the Artes button to send the storm at a
    higher angle than normal, or hold Artes + Down to send it straight forward.
    
    Rising Luna Rondo: Usable on the ground after 100 uses.  After 200 uses, hold
    the Artes button to make the 3rd hit knock the enemy downwards.
    
    Thunder Moon: After 200 uses, it adds more hits depending on how high you are
    in the air.
    
    Luna Storm: Adds 2 more hits after 200 uses.
    
    
    Burst/Mystic Artes
    ------------------
    Burst Artes: Normally when you use Judith's burst arte in air, she attacks 
    enemies on the ground in front of her.  To make her drop down onto enemies
    directly below her, hold Down on the left stick at the start of her burst arte.
    
    Mystic Arte: When you execute Judith's Mystic Arte on the ground, you can do a
    slight variation on it by holding Attack + Guard.  It doesn't do extra hits or
    extra damage, it just changes the animation a bit.
    
    
    Joke Artes
    ----------
    All of these require the Glamorous Maid costume and the Deck Brush to be
    equipped.
    
    Moonlight Blast: After 300 uses, performing this on the ground does the joke
    arte Brush Spear.  Hold Attack + Artes + Guard to perform the Mind of Brush
    extension.  Keep the buttons held to keep sweeping.
    
    Sundering Moon: Hold Attack + Artes + Guard to perform a nameless joke
    extension where Judith runs forward and sweeps the ground.  Keep the buttons
    held to keep running.
    
    Luna Havoc: After 400 uses for this and 200 uses for Sundering Moon, Luna Havoc
    can perform the same extension as Sundering Moon.
