Question from GamerGirlie101
What does hardening a character do?
I'm playing through the game a second time but I never knew what people meant by having a character hardened. Which characters can be hardened, and what does it do? I want to romance Alistair this time around, but I don't know why it might better to harden him.
Character hardening refers to specific conversation choices that cause one of your companions to view things a big differently. Far as I understand it, this applies only to the two flakiest companions: Leliana and Alistair.
The effect with Leliana is much smaller so I'll only explain Alistair. At the end of his side quest to meet his sister you will have a conversation with him about how things went. If you give him the cold hard response that goes along the lines of, "everyone is out for themselves, you should learn that". Later when you speak with him at camp again he will have a chat with your character about it. This hardens his outlook on things, if you coddle him he will be less prepared for the rigors ahead... such as becoming king.
I'm unsure of every single effect possible from this but the major one is his becoming king. He will be a lot easier to convince if you choose this path and if hardened you will lose far less approval rating with him by making him become king. Without hardening Alistair, making him King could result in an overall loss of 20-40 approval rating. Hardened I've never lost more than 3 points in my conversation choices.
