"This game is awful. Looks nice but plays horribly."
Lords of Shadow is the newest installment in the Castlevania franchise. Supposedly it's a reboot of the entire series. I'd rather go back to the way it was, which was still wasn't very good mind you, but just about any other Castlevania game is better than this.
Where should I begin? When it tries to be God of War it does it poorly. The action command scenes are horrible. Rather than tell you to press a specific button or give you any kind of warning, it instead has two rings that just pop up. You have to press X when one ring goes inside of the other, but the tutorial never tells you this. Not only is this used in boss battles but it's also used in tedious things like operating cranks! It's utterly ridiculous.
In past Castlevania to make things more difficult for the player they generally had various ways of doing this. Giving less items, making bosses a bit tougher, etc. But now they substitute that for area of effect (AOE) attacks. EVERY BOSS CAN DO THIS. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM. Not only that, but it's nearly impossible to dodge them, especially the Dark Lord Lycan's AOE attack.
Another thing. What's the deal with the lack of experience you get for beating bosses? Killing little goblins gives you five a piece. That's nice. Killing extremely difficult bosses should give you way more. But nope, Konami felt the need to screw you with that. Take a look at the achievements sometime. You get 10 for defeating an epic boss. And you only get 20 for beating the entire game on normal difficulty. WTF Konami?
As for the control scheme? Well, it's downright awful. Holding left and right trigger + hitting other buttons does a variety of things. Problem is, hitting left trigger is also dodge. So when I hit left trigger and then want to attack immediately after dodging, sometimes I do a gauntlet punch attack instead. This doesn't help at all when you're trying to dodge a boss that's dashing at you constantly.
And how about some variety when it comes to enemies, Konami? There are lots of lycans, some goblins, a spider or two, and little trolls. This game should be called Castlevania: Lords of the Lycans and the Trolls.
All in all, this game is like a beautiful apple you buy at the market. But when you bite into it, it's rotten to its core.
