Cthulhu Saves the World is an indie game title available on X-Box Live. It is
a console-style RPG in the vein of early 16-bit era RPGs. It is the fourth
release by Zeboyd Games and their second RPG. It currently sells for 240 MSP.
It is also available on Steam and Gamersgate for PC, bundled with Breath of
Death VII, for $2.99. Make sure you pick the bundle as it is also available by
itself for the same price.

This is the first indie title I have purchased. In general I am wary of buying
any game that only works online, but given its low price and high quality as
a game of this type, I pulled the trigger and picked it up and did not regret
it. I do not regret this at all as Cthulhu Saves the World is an excellent
game that I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys "old school" console RPGs
in the vein of titles from the 1980s and 1990s.

This title has gone through a major title update since the first time I
published this guide. Robert Boyd and his team have added extra dungeons,
party members, and a different questline called Cthulhu's Angels. Near the
end of the guide you will find a section detailing what I know about the
title update. Feel free to e-mail me and provide updates on any gaps I am
missing.

This guide supports the search function. To use it, hit Ctrl+F to bring up the
search bar in internet explorer and type in the corresponding title below to
jump straight to that section of the guide.

Cthulhu Saves the World begins with Cthulhu rising from the sea, prepared to
destroy the world. Suddenly a mysterious man appears and seals Cthulhu's power
away. Cthulhu slowly sinks back into the sea.

After an anti-climactic rise from the sea, Cthulhu will wash ashore defeated and
dejected. The narrator will explain that Cthulu must become a true hero to
regain his powers. Cthulhu will proclaim that this is what he will do.

There's a chest right near where you start, so be sure to get it. Head west to
find a girl being attacked by gooez. These enemies you can blaze through just
by using the normal attack. Once they die, the girl will be introduced as Umi
and join the party.

Make sure you fully explore all dungeons. Each dungeon only has a limited
number of random encounters and the game seems tuned for you to complete each
of these cycles. While you search each zone for all the treasures, you will
most likely burn through these encounters before reaching the end anyway.

Enter the cave and make sure you get the chest containing the Fleece Tunic in
the west. The stairs to the next floor are to the north and then to the west
at the next split. On the second floor is a chest with potions to the east,
while the way outside is to the west.

Work your way up the cliffs outside to run into Elonalina, Switchblade, and
Dash, the "Three Heroes of Goodly Justice." After a brief verbal confrontation
they will attack.

*****************************************************************************
* Cleric (90 HP), Hero (160 HP), Thief (110 HP) * 26 EXP * 36 GOLD          *
*****************************************************************************
* Target the cleric first. You should be able to take her out in a turn or *
* two. Note that Umi can both heal and stun. You can use her stun early on *
* to take one of the heroes out of a round to lessen their initial damage. *
* Once the cleric is beaten, take out the thief. You should then be in an *
* easy position to finish when only the hero remains. *
*****************************************************************************

Although defeated, Cthulhu guesses that they haven't seen the last of those
heroes. Most likely they have respawned at a nearby shrine.

Continue up the cliff and back inside the cave system. There's a chest in here
that contains 75 gold. The way out is west at the first split and north at the
next. This path will loop to the south and to a set of stairs. The dungeon's
last two chests are in here, one containing an Iron Sword and one containing
150 gold. The upward stairs on this floor will take you to the way outside.

Once outside continue climbing up the cliff. You'll see a bridge to the east.
Once you try to cross the bridge, the Star Terror will rise from the sea to
strike at you.

* Try to build up your combo meter on Star Terror early on. Save Umi's stun *
* for if the Star Terror severely damages the party. As long as you have *
* done all 25 battles, this fight should be very controllable, but you may *
* still need to use Umi's heal. Once your combo is high enough to finish or *
* nearly finish off the Star Terror, use it and end the battle in style. *

Continue east to Miskatonia.

The 1-Ups are in the inn. The only real requirement for you here is to talk to
the boy in the southwest corner of the town to learn that his dog has vanished
while on ancient ninja burial ground. I recommend talking to everyone just
because, but when you are ready head out of town and north through the woods to
a non-descript cave.

Exit the cave and return to Miskatonia. Talk to the boy to receive a Trance

This dungeon is a big maze, although for the most part the chests are located
relatively close to where you want to go. Begin by going all the way west,
then go all the way north. Go east, then go south at the nearby split. Follow
this to the stairs and go up them.

From here go west and then south. This will lead to some downward stairs. Go
down them and hit the switch. Work your way back to the gated path you passed
on the way and go through where the gate was and up the stairs. Follow the
path to the sword at the top of the shrine. Talk to the sword to engage Sharpe.

* Sharpe, like a lot of encounters of this nature, is more formidable as an *
* opponent than as a party member initially. Keep your party over 50% *
* health while fighting Sharpe. Keep building your combo meter and unleash *
* it when you can for maximum effect. Remember that if you use Cthulhu's *
* self-heal it will reset the counter, so don't hesitate to use the combo *
* beforehand if you think you might need to self-heal. If you have been *
* maxing out your battles in each dungeon Sharpe should not give you too *

Once he is defeated, Sharpe will agree to join the party alongside Cthulhu and
Umi. Once he does, make your way back outside and return to the hero's club in
Miskatonia. Umi will make another pass at the dark god, but will be interupted
by a fightened villagar from Dunwich to the south. He will say zombies have
overun the city and begs for help. Cthulhu will quickly proclaim they must go
and save the city, so head south to Dunwich.

*******************************************************************************
Upon arriving in Dunwich and finding that a zombie apocalypse has occured,
Cthulhu concludes that his old nemesis Nyarlathotep must be responsible. He
insists that the party minimize zombie casualties, however, which will force
you to navigate around the various "partying" zombies in the city.

Enter the first house and move east out the broken side of the house to find
the Zombie Tunic. Go inside the church and then out the broken side to the
graveyard and work your way around to the Sharp Blade. Continue your way around
the tombstones to the street.

Keep going to the southeast and to the next section of the city to find a
sorceress fighting some zombies. She introduces herself as October and gladly
joins the party. Once the scene ends, go to the northwest to claim two 1-Ups.
Work your way east from here to find a chest containing an Alchemist Dress.

Your ultimate goal is to make your way east. There's another chest in the
church along the way containing the Bane Sword, while the last chest is in the
southeast containing 1200 gold. Once you have both, head off the east side of
the screen. This will lead you to Nyarlathotep himself. After demanding to know
why Cthulhu is trying to stop him, Umi and Sharpe declare that the dark god is
now a hero, enraging the other dark god into attacking.

***************

*****************************************************************************
* Nyarlathotep (6000 HP), Fat Zombie (280 HP) (2) * 1934 EXP * 110 GOLD     *
*****************************************************************************
* You need to focus on Nyarlathotep until he is downed and ignore the two *
* zombies with him. This is because if you do kill a zombie, Nyarlathotep *
* will simply ressurect it. With four party members, you can have three of *
* them focus on the boss while Umi heals when needed. Utilize attacks that *
* add to the combo meter over simply higher damage attacks. Once you do use *
* the built-up combo, Sharpe's strike tends to do more than Cthulhu's so *
* you probably want to use it. Once Nyarlathotep is out of the way, kill *
* both zombies to claim victory. *
*****************************************************************************

Once Nyarlathotep is defeated, everyone will party and have a good time with
the zombies. After the festivities, the party continues east.

*******************************************************************************
The Swamp of Despair is an optional dungeon between Dunwitch and the Ghost
Forest. Being an RPG, this means it is semi-optional and most players will want
to go there.

There are two chests in the swamp you want to get. One contains a sword for
Cthulhu, while the other has a tome for October. Upon opening the chest with
the tome, however, you will be attacked by the guardian of the swamp, the Fire
Whale.

***************

* The key to the Fire Whale is to use the status ailment blind. The Fire *
* Whale is extremely susceptible to it, so have Umi hit him with it every *

* away at the boss until it goes down in flames. *

The first thing you probably notice reading this is the enemy variety of this
dungeon. The enemies here also have a wide range of attacks, so do not hold
back on using magic. Remember you regen some mana and all your health every
battle so you can be more liberal in your use of abilities than most RPGs.

To get to the end of the first area, go north and then east at the next split.
Go north at the split after this to claim the Bull Whip. Go south, past the
split you just came from, and follow the path. At the next split, go north to
to another split. Going west here will yield a 1-Up, while going east will move
you to the exit and some other chests.

On the next area grab the two chests. The exit here is in the northwest. Head
there once you have both chests. Once you move to the next area you will face
one of Cthulhu's ex-girlfriends.

* The Ape Princess will begin the battle by buffing the defense of her two *
* wolves. Despite this, they should be your first targets. If you do not *
* kill them, they will start doing a lot of damage late in the fight and *
* you won't be able to heal through it. Kill one, then the other, and then *
* focus on the princess. If you have Brave Wind, use it right off the bat. *
* You also want to try and avoid driving the princess insane as this seems *
* to increase the damage she does. This fight is about survival more than *
* dealing damage so just turtle through it if you have to. *
*                                                                           *

The party will come to onboard the alien ship. A strange cat creature named
Paws will appear. Cthulhu and Paws it seems were old drinking buddies back in
college. Paws will explain that his race is abducting cows to turn them into
super soldiers to conquer the world. He tires of constant conflict, however,
and says he wants to join Cthulhu's quest.

The space ship is decently sized and requires a lot of backtracking around that
is somewhat hard to describe. Essentially you need to deactivate forcefields
around the ship by accessing consoles, then backtrack to the field that went
down to find more consoles. While you do this you will find the six chests
littered around. Make sure you get them all before facing the boss.

The boss is on the bridge which is accessed behind the final forcefield. On the
bridge you will find Paws' evil clone Pawz. Pawz is the mastermind behind the
creation of the Bovinators and will attack the party to fulfill his plans of
conquest.

* Pawz only has one eye and, interestingly enough, it seems that his only *

* seems to be affected by it as the ability is written (about 60% of the *

When Pawz is defeated, approach the terminal on the bridge. Umi will attempt to
shut down the ship, but will instead cause it to crash into the Earth. Paws
will get everyone off in time, but the ship will be destroyed when it crashes
into the river. This will, however, open the path up to Kingsport, the
Graveyard of Memories, and the Water Shrine.

Graveyard is the second optional dungeon of the game. You can find it going
south along the dried out river. It is to the east near where the river had
previously reached the sea.

The graveyard is one single "floor" dungeon. Some of the chests are obscured
by terrain features, so keep a careful eye out. The chest containing the
Shotclaw has a boss hidden in it as well.

Talk to people around town to learn that a mysterious plague has struck the

to try and determine the source of the plague. Leave town and head to the east

Enter the shrine to meet Daere. Although the old man seems totally crazy, he
will agree to join the party. Head north and go west at the split to find the
chest with the 1-Ups. Go back to the split and continue on. You can go either
way at the split, they both go to the same place. After they merge follow the
long path around.

At the next split go west (north goes into some water you cannot enter yet).
Go east at the next split to get 10,000 gold, then return and go west into
the next room. Hit the switch and return back to the split where the water
was. The water is gone now, so go down into the canals. Follow the path
around. At the split, go east for the Swim Dress. Go back and head west and
then south to the next room.

All paths here lead to the stairs in the northeast. Take them up to the top
floor. Hit the switch here, then go back down and into the canal. You can
find a Holy Dress and a Rebirth Sword in this room, so grab them. When you
are ready, take the stairs in the center of the room.

At the first split in this room, go west to get five potions. Take the north
path and follow it around until you come to a switch and the Aqua Trident.
When the water drains, walk down into the canal and go to the southeast and
into the next room. Approach the fountain to claim some water to face the
Shoggoth.

This is the last full optional dungeon of the original release of the game. It
has five chests and five more encounters than the previous dungeons. The extra
boss here is also harder than the next several bosses you will face and
depending on your level may require an interesting strategy. She is located in
the chest containing the Giant Whip.

*****************************************************************************
* The Fallen Angel makes good use of the insanity mechanic. When she is *
* sane she will usually heal herself for several thousand health every *
* turn. This amount will go up every turn as well. She will augment this *
* with attacks that will eventually wipe everyone out if the fight goes too *
* lnog. When she is insane, however, she takes significantly more damage *
* and is unable to heal, instead doing an attack called Hurt All every turn *
* until everyone dies. You need to drive her insane to start ticking away *
* at her, but depending on your level you may want to have someone in the *
* party who can turn her back sane if on a turn you need time to heal. *
* Switching back and forth once or twice is viable, so don't hesitate to do *

The paths through the first floor, and really most of this dungeon, just form
a large loop. You can grab the Fire Blade and the four potions on this first
floor. The stairs to the next floor are in the west.

The second floor loops in a big circle as well. This area has two potions, the
Volcanic Tome, and a Power Tunic. Grab them before going to the third floor.

The third floor is this same sort of layout. This one has three chests
containing a large amount of gold each. Claim all three and move to the next
floor.

The fourth floor is a widing path with dead-end branches. The first and last
of these brnaches, however, each have treasure. The first one has seven rings
of power, which increase everyone's strength by ten permanently. The last
branch has some Rocket Claws. Once you have them, head to the peak of the
volcano to face the demonic dragon.

* Ember is really easy. You will probably take very little damage from any *

Once Ember is defeated, Cthulhu offers to let him join the party... or die.
Ember chooses the former and flies the party down the volcano.

With Ember in the party you can now fly on the world map by pressing X to take
off and land. This allows you access to a couple areas you couldn't reach
before. The obvious places are the Cave of Destiny, the cave opposite the Beach
Cliff exit, and Innsmouth, located on an island south of this cave. There are,
however, a couple other islands and a long stretch of land in the north. Sadly
there are no treasures hidden on these islands, but there are higher level
enemies that can be encountered randomly.

the other will icnreases the party's will by ten permanently. Once you are
ready to move on, go to the inn and spend the night. The townspeople will try
to murder the party in the night, but Cthulhu will angrily put a stop to it.

After demanding to know why they were trying to murder him, when they should
only murder strangers, the townsfolk will tell Cthulhu that Dagon has taken
over and told them too. Enraged that his followers have been stolen, Cthluhu
will charge to the Marsh Foundry in the north of town to confront Dagon.

The Marsh Foundrey's main innovation is the use of conveyor belts that force
you to go a certain direction. At the end of each floor is a switch that makes
these normal walkways, but until you get there the conveyors will present you
with the dilemma of claiming chests as you move along, or going to the end and
shutting them off then backtracking to the chests.

Regardless, the layout of each floor is fairly straightforward. On the first
floor you will find three chests containing a single gold, a Chaos Trident,
and a Curse Sword. On the second floor are three chests with five 1-Ups, yet
another Giant Whip, and an Energy Hilt. On the third floor are three more
chests with 75000 gold, three more 1-Ups, and a Cultist Robe. On the fourth
floor are only two chests with an Anti-Matter Claw and 65000 gold.

The fifth floor is flooded. Work your way through and then down to the sixth
floor where you will find Dagon.

* Dagon is accompanied by two Deep Ones that he will usually ressurect if *
* you kill one. Use this to your advantage. Have one party member kill one *

* always waste his turn ressurecting that Deep One and not attack you, *
* giving you a free ride to pummel him down relatively unhindered. *
*****************************************************************************

With Dagon defeated, Cthulhu will finally become a true hero and regain his
powers. Once he does, he will drive the entire party insane and destroy the
world. This will prompt the narrator to compromise his artistic integrity to
try and give the player a happy ending. In doing so, R'lyeh will rise out of
the sea and beckon the party to a final dungeon.

When you enter the city you will see two paths. Both lead to the stairs to the
second floor, however each path has a piece of gear on it, so you should
probably make a full loop and get both of them before heading to the next
floor.

On the second floor head outside and cross the bridge. In the next building,
there are four chests. There's only really one path, with long branches that
lead to these chests and dead-end as you go. Claim all four and work your
way back outside to the east. Cross the bridge to face Elonalina, Switchblade,
and Dash once more. They have recovered seven allegedly powerful crystals and
challenge you once more.

Continue across the bridge and into the next section of the city. There are a
lot of paths here, but they all eventually reach the same desination. There
are three chests on the third floor, so make sure you get them.

The fourth floor has one main path with several branches off it. Each of these
branches leads to a chest. There are a total of four on this floor. Snag them
all as you go along. At this point you've most likely burned through all
fifty battles, so it should go pretty quick. Head up the stairs when you are
ready to begin the final sequence of the game.

* Azathoth is weak to fire and holy attacks. I used a party of Cthulhu, *
* Sharpe, Umi, and Ember to take advantage of this. Ember and Cthulhu can *
* do fire damage, while Sharpe can deal holy damage. Use these three to *
* deal damage, while Umi will need to heal every turn. You want to keep the *
* party as close to topped off as possible. Azathoth can attack everyone at *
* once for a good deal of damage if he wants. If you ever get down to two *
* or less party members, Azathoth will use an instant kill attack over and *

Congratulations, you won. After the ending, be sure to save your game to unlock

Experience and gold are somewhat inconsistent depending on enemy party make-
up. This is because you get a ten percent boost to the initially programmed
experience of enemies. The values below are the average you should get, but
given that the boost is applied to the total at the end of the battle and
then rounded, there will be slight variations.

Enemies also appear on the world map in the areas around their dungeon. There
is a total random encounter counter for the entire game of 200 battles on the
world map.

* [TUI] Title Update Information *
**********************************
Cthulhu Saves the World was released in December 2010 for X-Box Live as an
indie title. It was the fourth release of Zeboyd Games, although it soon
became their most popular. After first quarter sales were released, Zeboyd
Games announced their intention to update the title to include more content
for a PC release, but also sought a fund drive in order to keep their doors
open. In return these updates would also be given to the X-Box 360 version
of the game.

This fund drive was, by their own accounts, a great success. This allowed the
team to port the game to PC and release it on Steam, where it garnered more
profits for Zeboyd Games in its first week than it had up to that point on
X-Box Live.

As I mentioned in my Introducton, I do not have access to a hard internet
connection until near the end of the year. Since you cannot play X-Box indie
games offline, and cannot download the PC version without a solid connection
either, I cannot update any first-hand specifics until that time. For now,
this section will offer some limited information on the title update content.
_____________________________________________________________________________
Astral Cave is a new dungeon located northeast of the Cave of Destiny. It
has different loot on different modes of play.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bromides were added to the title, similiar to a concept present in the
Playstation update of Lunar: Silver Star Story.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cthulhu's Angels mode was added that changes your party and a lot of the
dialogue in the game. Your new party consists of a new version of Umi (Dark
Umi), Elonalina, Molly the Were-Zombire, and October. This mode also has
some variations to the dungeons from the standard game, including different
loot to find and enemies to combat.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dark Umi is the subject of an interesting, but now unrecreatable, glitch.
In the original title on X-Box Live Umi was only available in her standard
flavor, while Dark Umi was added with the title update that added Cthulhu's
Angels. If you had a save file before the update, after the update Umi
would be transformed into Dark Umi in the standard game. If she was in the
party on the save she would remain as Umi, but once you removed her from
the party she would transform into Dark Umi. Likewise she would retain her
equipment, but if you tried to change her gear she would only be allowed to
equip Sharpe as a weapon. Special thanks to Got_Mine for this information.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dem is now a recruitable party member after defeating him in the Cave of
Destiny. He also can apparently be recruited by leveling Sara up to level
forty as well in Cthulhu's Angels mode.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Insane Mode is a new harder difficulty that has been added to the game. A
second new game mode, Director's Commentary, was also added that includes
small icons in select locations that feature commentary from the minds who
came up with the insanity in Cthulhu Saves the World.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Penny Arcade receives a cameo of some kind as a hint to future productions.
Apparently it involves Robert Khoo, but I have not been able to find any
more information on it than that.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sara from Breath of Death VII also appears, replacing Dem in the Cave of
Destiny in Cthulhu's Angels mode. She is also recruitable once you defeat
her.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Soulcaster Cavern is a new dungeon located on an island far to the north of
the continent. There are a few new bosses in this dungeon to contend with
and it is intended to be harder than the fight in Cave of Destiny.

Abdul Alhazred is an Arab poet created by Lovecraft and the author of the
Necronomicon. He is said to have been from Yemen and lived during the
Umayyad Caliphate.

Charlotte Dacre was an English author who wrote Gothic novels that often
featured violent and sexually predatory female characters. They also tended to
feature dark, supernatural plotlines.

Cthulhu Saves the World: Super Hyper Enhanced Championship Edition Alpha
Diamond DX Plus Alpha FES HD - Premium Enhanced Game of the Year Collector's
Edition (without Avatars!) is the official name given for the title update on
Zeboyd Games' website. This is the only place in this guide where that name
appears in all its glory.

Dem the Skeleton Knight is one of the four party members of Breath of Death
VII. It was Zeboyd Games' third title released on X-Box Live. Sara is also a
party member from Breath of Death VII.

Dunwich is a city in the Cthulhu Mythos. It is located in Massachusetts. The
primary appearance of the city is in "The Dunwich Horror."

Innsmouth is a city in Massachusetts in the Cthulhu Mythos. It is home to the
cult that worships and serves Dagon.

Kingsport is another such city. Kingsport is featured in numerous stories and
is said to be southeast of Arkham. It's primary industry is fishing.

Lunar: Silver Star Story was an RPG that originally appeared on the Sega CD.
It was published in the United States by Working Designs and was widely
known as one of the first JRPGs to receive a North American release without
having much of the distinctly Japanese aspects removed. That being said, it
also contained a lot of additional humor inserted by Working Designs for
that release.

Miskatonic is the name of a fictional river, valley, and university in the
Cthulhu Mythos. Both Dunwich and Arkham are said to be along the Miskatonic
River.

Molly the Were-Zompire is the title character from Zeboyd Games' second text
adventure title released on X-Box Live.

Obed Marsh was a sea captain created by Lovecraft. He created the Esoteric
Order of Dagon in Innsmouth and, after converting most of the inhabitants, the
city saw a massive upsurge in fishing.

Paws is a reference to one of RPGamer's contributors. RPGamer was one of the
first sites to bring attention to Breath of Death VII, the spiritual precursor
to Cthulhu Saves the World.

Penny Arcade is a long-running web comic and associated website. There is a lot
more to it than that, and really if you do not know who they are you should
check them out, but that is how Gabe and Tycho began their career.

"Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn" is a phrase from the story
"Call of Cthulhu" which translates as "In his house at R'lyeh dead Cthulhu
waits dreaming."

Providence, Rhode Island is the home town of H.P. Lovecraft.

RDespair is the GameFAQs tag of Robert Boyd, one of the three people who
created Cthulhu Saves the World. The other two are William "Bill" Stiernberg
and Gordon McNeil.

R'lyeh is the city in which Cthulhu sleeps, located in the South Pacific as
far from land as is possible. It is notable for it's "non-Eucludean geometry."

Xellos the Priest is an enigmatic character from Slayers. He is famous for his
catchphrase, "Sore we himitsu desu," or "That is a secret."
