Is there a point to the spotlights in Chapter 5?

So far all I notice is that they make a pretty sparkly effect when they cross.
Other than that, they seem useless.
I ask only because I find myself to be the only person in a party of 6 fighting Death,
and the rest of the party is out exploring and playing with the lights.

The two lights are for use against Death. When he flies down and is laughing if you cross the lights in the center of the arena near the cogs. when he flies into it he will recieve 550 damage and retreat back up to his boss room.
