    Introduction

Hi, and welcome to ... *sigh* ... yet ANOTHER Pokémon walkthrough for some free-to-start game by me. ... Think I've been doing too many of those lately.

In any case, this particular guide is for Pokémon Picross, a game announced during the November 2015 Nintendo Direct that immediately surprised many of those watching. Picross in general has been, while decent, not a particularly popular series. Prolific, sure, but not really the kind of games that top most people's lists. Still, I suppose it was inevitable, eh? I mean, think about it. There was a Picross NP vol. 1 game for the Super Famicom back in the 90s that had some Pokémon puzzles on it, and then there was the cancelled Pokémon Picross for the GameBoy/Color. With all the experimentation Pokémon has done as of recent - new Mystery Dungeon mechanics, Rumble World, Shuffle, Battle Trozei, Pokken... - it was bound to resurface.

Can't say I'm entirely pleased with the idea of another free-to-start title from Pokémon, but it's something somewhat original, and not a blatant rehash like Shuffle. >_> In any case, my rambling aside, I hope you enjoy!

    Overview of Gameplay

When you start up the game, you'll get a general overview of gameplay in Stage 00-01, but I'll reiterate here.

Pokémon Picross is a puzzle game much akin to the other titles in the Picross series; 3DS users may be most familiar with the Picross e# series. Essentially, you'll be given a grid and numbers alongside it. It might look something like this:

              3 2 3

            3 1 1 1 3
            _ _ _ _ _
         3 |_|_|_|_|_|
         5 |_|_|_|_|_|
       2 2 |_|_|_|_|_|
       1 1 |_|_|_|_|_|
         3 |_|_|_|_|_|

The grid in puzzles typically starts out empty, and the numbers are clues as to what spots need to be filled in. Your job is to use the numbers and their positioning to figure out the solution to the puzzle. For example, see that row with 5 in it? That means that 5 spots in that row need to be filled in - coincidentally, all of them! The two columns with 3? That means they have three spots in their columns.

Now, let's look at the other groups, say "2 2" on the left side. That means there's two groups of two in that row, separated by at least one spot. That means the leftmost two and the rightmost two. That "1 1" below it? There's two separate spots in that row that are nonadjacent and need to be filled. Similarly, if you saw "1 1 2", there'd be a group of one dot, some gapping spaces, another dot, spaces, and then two together. The order of the numbers does indeed hint as to the order of the groups of blocks; for example "1 2 1" cannot be the same as the aforementioned "1 1 2".

Using these number hints together is vital to completing the puzzle. The best way to proceed is by looking at how the row and column hints interact with each other on certain tiles, and with filled tiles already in the rows and columns. You can mark tiles you wish to fill and tiles you KNOW are wrong with the tools in the top-left corner of the Touch Screen; the pen fills in tiles, and the X button lets you mark tiles which you know are wrong. If you know you have an entire row correct already, all blank spots in that row shouldn't be filled, right? So you can mark those with X's to help you later clear out the respective columns.

As you'll learn in Area 01, you can include Pokémon in your party to activate their abilities, which usually help to reveal various parts of the puzzle. Various Pokémon have differing abilities with different levels of effectiveness, and they're usually used at the start of a puzzle, after which it'll be some time before it can be activated again.

Area 01 also introduces the Energy Gauge. When placing down tiles in a Pokémon Picross puzzle, you'll lose Energy from the gauge. You can expand the Energy Gauge's capacity using Picrites (you'll get a free boost to 200 units in Area 01, after Stage 02); just press Y after the gauge is unlocked. The Energy cost of a stage is enumerated before the stage begins, so if you don't have enough you'll have to recharge the gauge using Picrites or wait. The Energy Gauge increments as thus:

Energy LevelCost to ReachNew Energy Cap
    Level 1 (Initial)N/A100
    Level 250 Picrites200
    Level 3100 Picrites300
    Level 4150 Picrites400
    Level 5400 PicritesInfinite!

    Picrites & Microtransactions

Throughout the game, you will be awarded numbers of Picrites. Picrites are a sort of currency in Pokémon Picross, with four primary purposes. You can:

    • Use them to refill the Energy Gauge. This always costs 10 Picrites.
    • Use them to make a Pokémon usable again even though it's recharging. This is not available on Legendary/Mythical Pokémon.
    • Use them to expand the Energy Gauge. This was enumerated previously.
    • Use them to unlock new areas.

There are numerous ways to earn Picrites.

    • You'll get them in quantities of 30 straight from the start, but only in the first handful of levels.
    • Most levels have a sort of challenge attributed to them in their missions, earning you 1 or 3 Picrites. You usually can get 4-6 from most such levels.
    • You can do the Daily Training regimen from the bottom menu of the Touch Screen. This can be done only once daily, and gives you random-generated Picross puzzles to solve as fast as possible.
    • You can collect the various Medals in the game.

There is a fifth way, though for much of the game the previous ones will be quite sufficient. The fifth way is to buy them, of course; this is "free to start", after all. You can purchase them in quantities of 200, 1,000, 2,000, and 4,000, with costs specific to your region. You can buy up to 5,000 at max (some $32 US worth), after which the game will give you free ones in batches of 1,000 up to a max of 8,000. Below, you'll find the various costs of them for your region. Obviously pay attention to the unit cost if you intend to buy some odd quantity of them.

Upon reaching Area 01, you'll be given a Squirtle and an Eevee and 30 Picrites. The former two can be used as Support Pokémon. You normally only have one party slot, but by spending Picrites you can open another. Then just drag the Pokémon into the respective slots and exit the menu. The next party slot will cost 50 Picrites, but spend them later on if you want.
