"Worth the quarters and blisters on your hands..."

-Visuals 9/10-

Aliens offers you a platform shooter that is almost un-paralleled by any other platform game in the Arcades. Placing you in control of a pair of character, you fight and blast your way through several stages of Aliens looking to kill you. Well detailed character designs, and exceptionally detailed levels which are dark and moody greet you at every turn. Certain stages revolve around driving the APC and crushing Aliens in a acid splashing fest. First rate stuff.

-Audio 8/10-

Excellent level music greets you in this Alien blasting mayhem, keeping you riveted to the screen and almost in a groove of sorts. Each stage has its own music that has a slight variation, but nothing that will keep your mind on just the music. The sound effects include sound bites from the movie with certain weapons sounding like those from the movie, and the Alien screeches as they attack or are blown away by your pulse rifle.

-Control 8/10-

Your basic run and gun game, you have a jump and a firing button that you use for Alien blasting. There isn’t a need for combination moves or anything that requires a special stick movement and button press to let go of some awesome move. It’s just blast your way through the game, and keep moving in one direction, turning from time to time to get one that is sneaking up behind you.

-Gameplay 8/10-

Blasting Aliens. It doesn’t get anymore advanced than that. The game is either one or two players, and the basis of the game is to move from level to level with your health intact. The computer controller enemies themselves have nothing on you except in later level where the sheer numbers of them can be somewhat overwhelming. Either way, you’ll do better to play the two player option, and have a friend next to you watching and firing on what you can’t hit. One other portion of the game revolves around using the APC to blow away and run over Aliens. While this portion is short lived, it’s a cool variation on just a run and gun type of game.

-Overall 8/10-

Aliens is a good looking game with some addictive gameplay thrown in for good measure. If you’re lucky enough to find an Arcade machine of this, then by all means, it’s worth the quarters your throw into it. In the past 5 years, I’ve only seen the machine once, and I haven’t seen it since 1998 in a truck stop out in the middle of nowhere. What would have been nice, was if this game had been brought to a US console system, but alas, it’s one of those games that didn’t quite make it this far.
