Double Dragon? No....not really...

As beat 'em games go, most are cloned off of one game or another with decent results from time to time. Combatribes is a good example of what happens when a game is cloned, remade with new characters and new locations, and then put to life! Putting you in the role of one of three different characters, you battle through the streets and night clubs against a vicious and brutal street gang that has literally taken over the turf. You'll battle bikers, gang thugs and sexy martial arts chicks as well as take on some pretty wild enemies in weird locations.

-Game Play 8/10-

Classic beat 'em up gaming is what can be found here! Combatribes offers the gamer one of three characters, all of which pretty much move and fight the same. You'll fight through different environments that include hockey rinks, a night club and the mean city streets, all of which give no quarter to a fledging hero! Something that puts a twist on the game play, is the fact that no matter what you do, or where you go you life is on a timer. With each passing moment, your life bar goes down and without the insert of a quarter for more life, you'll find yourself ending up flat in a hurry!

-Control 8/10-

A little sluggish at first, the placement of the buttons are a little off and take some time to get used to. Punch, Kick and Jump is what you have to work with, but no fear; there is no need to learn special controller movements, just walk into an enemy and start mashing the buttons! Weapons can be picked up with the punch button and then used accordingly with the direction you're facing.

-Audio 8/10-

Some sort of techno music was quietly creeping through the background, but the sound effects rang clear. Every grunt and groan, every smashing bottle and baseball bat swing as well as the constant grunts, groans and death cries of your opponents matches the game and the pace it sets!

-Visuals 8/10-

Impressive to say the least, you've got a wide variety of lighting effects as well as special effects from flame throwers and disco floor lights blinking in tune with the music. Each stage sets itself apart from the others with detail and flare that isn't easily match by any other action game in this catergory. Character designs range from the realistic and dangerous, to the down right silly with fat clowns running about throwing bowling pins at you!

-Quarter Crunching 9/10-

Because Combatribes is the type of pay to play game, you'll spend a few bucks continuing, especially when you get trapped in a corner and then smashed on by your opponents! With the life timer constantly ticking, you'll need to put a few bucks up just to get through the first half of the game and probably another three or four for the last half.

-Overall 8/10-

Combatribes does a fair job at bringing more smashing action to the table and steering people away from games like Final Fight and Double Dragon. While it's not at the top of the heap, it does have some draw simply in the environments that you're allowed to run and fight through. Lace up your gloves, pick up a bottle and smash it over some thugs's time to brawl with the Combatribes!
