I found this problem to be annoying when I was playing, until I found out that the choppiness was caused by the game speed! Set the game speed to turbo and it'll play smoothly. (I tested this with the PSN version and the original one.)

To be honest, I never found the game had choppy music for me.

Did you actually try playing it on the original hardware, or were you using a PS2 / PS3?

I tried this on the original PS1 hardware, the PS3 and on my PSP (via the PSN).
