So, did anyone else think it was april fools?

This has to be one of the worst contracts in recent memory.

$120m for a singles hitter with a mediocre batting average. He's a career .355 SLUGGING hitter in the Rangers' launching pad of a ballpark. He steals bases, but has a very pedestrian caught stealing percentage, which is what *really* matters.

His defense is great, I agree, but that 1 tool doesn't command $120m.

I wouldn't call him terrible - he's good for a shortstop - but definitely not worth that salary. Perhaps a 4 year, 40 million deal. My comp is Angel Pagan - while he's a center fielder, his slugging is 100 points higher and his SB% is high. He's also being paid in the prime years.

I mean, are they paying Andrus for what he *can* do in the future? From what I've seen, he's almost exclusively a singles hitter and not a huge threat on the bases. His defense is great, but that's his only standout quality. I could see him possibly hitting a few home runs if his slugging wasn't so low in such a hitter-friendly park. Do people expect him to turn it around and start hitting home runs? That's really too much to expect from him. Yeah, yeah, he's 24, but he has NEVER shown ANY signs of power or slugging on the big league level.

Y'all better not say he was an all-star as we all know that's just a popularity contest. And yes, the Ranger did have among the highest attendance numbers in those years.

At best, he becomes a poor-man's Omar Vizquel, but I doubt he'll have some of the BA years that Vizquel had. Vizquel is also an extreme outlier because of his longevity.

I just don't get it.

It is because he is easily the #2 SS in baseball behind Tulo and is only 24.. And he's still going to be making around 6 mill for 2 more years and 15/yr starting in 2015. But he has the option to opt out after 2018 and he most likely will unless he pulls a Vernon Wells-esque nosedive or something.

So essentially Texas will have Andrus for 3 years of his prime at 15 mil per year which is a pretty good value when a guy like BJ Upton is making the same money now.
