Hey guys, built a pretty basic build last year when my tax refund came in and over the last few months i've found that a lot of the newer games coming out have been giving me a hard time mainly because my video card isn't really up to snuff. i was wondering if anyone could give me any advice for a decent upgrade, something i won't really have to worry about for at least the next year and a half. here are my current specs:

gpu: gt640
cpu: intel core i7-2600 cpu @3.40Ghz
memory: 8gb ram
motherboard: asrockz77 extreme 4

if it's something that's going to last me a decent amount of time i wouldn't mind spending between 400-500, but i was really thinking somewhere between 200-400 max

for 400$ i would get a AMD R9 290 or for around 300$ either the AMD R9 280X or Nvidia GTX770.
i still haven't found what i'm looking for...

Check your power supply before upgrading your GPU. The 640 specs recommend a 300W-350W power supply depending on the model.

AMD's site either didn't list specifics or I couldn't find them, but Sapphire's site recommends a 750W supply.

i've been thinking about it a bit, would an nvidia gtx 770 be supported by my current build or would i have to upgrade other things as well? off the top of my head i think the card will need a stronger psu, about a 600 watt maybe?

NVIDIA recommends a minimum 600W supply for that model.
