Have read a few lengthy books recently (by my standard anyway!). The Wind-Up Bird Chronicles, American Gods and 11.22.63. I fancy some shorter stories (stand alone or part of a series/compilation), can you folks recommend some my way?

Flowers for Algernon - Best short story I can think of.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories are all pretty short and worth reading for the most part. Same for much of Edgar Allan Poe's work.

Shinichi Hoshi has written many good short stories, but I'm not sure what is available in English.

Dude, that's like 300 pages. Though I do remember a ~30 page, hacked-up version in my high school English textbook.

The Dead by James Joyce

This, even though I'm not a Joyce fan in general.

Poe - The Tell-Tale Heart, The Cast of Amontillado, The Masque of the Red Death
Chekhov - pretty much anything
Kafka - The Metamorphosis (closer to a novella, though), The Judgment, In the Penal Colony
Raymond Carver - Cathedral

Just off the top of my head . . . there are so many . . .
"Do. Or do not. There is no try." - Yoda, from Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

Check out Vladamir Nabokovs collection of short stories.

I always try and have a collection of short stories on hand as a little breather between large novels.

The Nightside series, the books are only like 200 pages long, but the prints big, and the stories are amusing.

Well, it's been 30 or so years since I read it in junior high or high school, but I certainly don't remember it being 300 pages long. Perhaps I had that hacked up version you mentioned.
