I'm glad we have so many "mma fans" that care more about a fighter's PR skills than their actual fighting ability.

f*** off and go do something you actually enjoy, this bizarre vicariously living through fighters that are rich and have ghost writers for their press conferences is a cancer.

Nice butthurt, bro.

Nah Kadd is right

So many pro wrestling fans coming over and get more into the drama than the sport. That sucks. I want MMA to stay a legitimate sport instead of turning into a bunch of scripted crap. (I enjoy WWE but i want them to stay separated)

I don't want UFC to become like the WWE with scripted promos and stuff.

The way things are headed we might end up with both brands working together. I think that'd be horrible for the sport of MMA.

I appreciate that some of you guys take your martial arts seriously, but, and don't take this as a dis to fighters or any martial arts practitioners, you're seriously romanticizing what MMA really is or ever has been. That is not to say that it can't be legitimate someday, although probably not at the rate things are going, but McGregor and the trash talk era, "money fights," and fun fights, and all that stuff is at best a lateral movement regarding legitimacy.

MMA has never been a legitimate sport and UFC has never been anything close to a legit sports organization. It started out as the Gracie's pet project to showcase their BJJ fighting system against handpicked opponents while ignoring all the guys out there who could've blown the whole thing up. Zuffa bought it to make money and started a f***ing reality show with mostly bottom of the barrel talent which they use to fluff their cards. WME IMG has carried on that legacy.

PRIDE was riddled with 'roids, freak show fights, and fixed fights and aside from freak show fights (mostly) UFC hasn't been much better. Steroids have been rampant since UFC's inception. Even now with USADA we're seeing guys like Jones and Romero game the system.

As for talking crap and all the perks and pitfalls that come with it, Tito Ortiz walked us down that path almost 20 years ago. Shamrock, Severn, and Tank Abbott actually were in pro-wrestling because they could make more money there.

Consensus #1 WW challenger Jon Fitch was kept away from a second title fight for years because he was boring.

Chuck got to bounce around doing whatever because Tito obviously tried to duck him and was placated in doing so.

This isn't the downward spiral into pro-wrestling people think it is. They've always been in bed together. Very little about MMA tells the tale of a legit sport.

Kadd talks more about McGregor and Sage Northcutt than any other fighters.

I thought i did. Im assuming you disagree that it's already a real sport.

@DanielCormier

Good post and i definitely agree about the past. But MMA has come a long way and is recognized as a legit sport at this point. It's not just seen as a gimmick anymore. I dont want it to go back to being taken as a joke.

A union, and better pay will go a long way towards that. But yeah i honestly cant argue with anything you said

my question was what do you mean by 'stay' a real sport

so i want to know when it started being a real sport, and what was different about time

to be clear i do not think the promotional direction necessarily voids the idea that mma is a real sport

It's hard to quantify.

But i'd say in the last 5 years or so it has been recognized by main stream culture as a legitimate sport.

Prior to that it was still seen as something only "just bleed" type of dudes was into

I dont have an issue with promotion. I have an issue with fighting ability taking a backseat to it

Boxing has done s*** like all of this for decades and was still considered a legitimate sport. There's a great deal of room for improvement but it's not as bad as the picture you're trying to paint.
