Have to agree with the families on this one...

Wait - why are the families blaming the cinema for the massacre? It wasn't their fault that the killer chose that particular location.

I understand that it's rather tactless to say, "Sorry your relatives were murdered in our theater. How about a free ticket?"

Nevertheless, I think the hostile reaction is unwarranted. I see no reason to doubt that the theater owners had the best of intentions in mind.

Was there any explanation offered for why the EMERGENCY DOOR ALARM did not ring when Holmes opened the door? That's totally on the cinema for that blunder.

I've never been to a theater where it did go off, and that's probably because a lot of people use it as a fast exit after the movie.

Did the employees even think?

Its an invitation to a memorial/remembrance service. It'd be tactless not to invite the family members....

I don't really know the situation. I understand that the theatre is in a bad position being closed for half a year because a psychopath chose their location as his playground (please note I am not comparing loss of business to loss of life, but the theatre presumably employs a lot of people and needs to move on).

If it's true that the Cinemark owners didn't speak to or offer any sympathy to the family members of the victims, then I absolutely understand the hostility. They're ignored for months and then sent an impersonal invitation to a publicity event.

True, but they certainly shouldn't have sent out the same boilerplate invitations they sent everyone else.

I'm not sure what it's like at your local theater, but as far as I know, in most theaters those doors aren't typically emergency exits, equipped with alarms. They are usually normal exit doors that go straight out into the parking lot so people can avoid going back through the lobby.
