There's more to it than refusing to participate. A simple refusal to step on the paper is one of the intended results of the assignment, you don't send folks to a Student Conduct hearing over that. You certainly don't lawyer up over that.

The only other explanation is that everyone involved, Rotela, the professor, the school administration, his lawyer, everyone, is profoundly stupid.

The other explanation is, of course, that the school is lying about fairly much everything.

My money is on shouting match. Can't prove it of course, but that's the way it feels from what information is out there.

I guess I don't know what exactly the school would have to lie about that ends up benefiting them. What circumstance are you picturing?

America. The land of "I'm offended!"

You should have your account suspended for this post. Offensive to an entire country all at once? Despicable.

"Florida Atlantic University is deeply sorry for any hurt that this incident may have caused the community and beyond," wrote Lisa Metcalf, the school's director of media relations, in an email. "As an institution of higher learning, we embrace open discourse in our classrooms, but with that comes a level of responsibility. The exercise was insensitive and hurtful; it will not be used again."

Fantastic. That's definitely not exactly what the little brat wanted.

I'm finding a couple of other stories claiming that Rotela threatened the professor in some way, but none of them say exactly how he did that. A few sources are also reporting that the professor explicitly informed the class that the assignment was optional, and no one would be forced to participate.

Not very surprising. The student clearly didn't get suspended because he "politely" declined to participate, especially since him choosing not to participate was expected due to the nature of the lesson and was meant to spark discussion.

In all honesty, as a Christian man, this guy sounds like an oversensitive idiot. Universities are not made to be religious, if that's the case, GO TO A RELIGIOUS COLLEGE. You chose to go to a public school, and then when a professor did what I would consider a perfectly normal lecture and exercise for the class at hand, you flipped a ***** and ruined the experience for the rest of the class.

If I get suspended, I will hire a lawyer and demand an apology.

The professor was put on administrative leave because he's receiving death threats.

School officials expressed concerned about Poole’s physical safety after he allegedly received death threats and racially-tinged messages on his voicemail. Poole is black.

“I’ve never seen anything like it on campus, the vitriol that has been released on this guy,” Chris Robe, assistant professor of communications and faculty union president, told the Sun Sentinel.

In an email to The Daily Caller, Lisa Metcalf, an FAU spokeswoman confirmed Poole’s employment status.

“As a result of the reaction to a recent exercise in Dr. Poole’s intercultural communications class, the instructor’s personal safety has been compromised,” Metcalf wrote. “Dr. Poole will not teach any classes, conduct office hours or be present at any of FAU’s campuses or sites.”
