Religion isn't about truth in the same way science is. Religion can be just a tool or a toy or an art.

Coming to that realization myself was one of the more freeing things I’ve ever done.

I love when people talk about me like I'm not here. I also love when they use vague terms that don't even say anything specific about what they find so wrong with my behavior. oh yeah just full on passive aggressive schoolgirl gossip that s*** gets me off. I also get hot when the two most disrespectful and disruptive people are trying to make a case about me being an a****** (or whatever it is they aren't saying but will b**** about nonetheless.)

But, well, expecting you to behave in any way other than what you advertised would be insanity. And unlike some people I'm not going to b**** about it for multiple posts like its some kind of support group. Can't expect everyone to act like an adult.

not like he was dismissing all the followers of religion as stupid, just their beliefs.

Not even that. Just the augments used.

A religious belief doesn't have to be true, only useful or in some way rewarding. In fact it can be demonstrably false and still be useful or in some way rewarding.

Because of this, "convincing" for most people isn't going to mean scientific rigor, it's just going to mean "not clearly false in a way I can be forced to recognize and care about."

I mean, people who talk about and compare religions might find possible truth or falsity, evidentiary backing, etc. as a kind of aesthetic way to differentiate good religious beliefs from bad ones, but they have different goals in mind than the person who is using a religious belief to get through the evil of the day, or woo a woman, or feel good about themself.

If a smashy rock gets the nut open, who gives a s*** if it's not a precision instrument, machined to exacting specifications?

I know that which is why I said it's not really useful to the topic. I think pretty much everyone can accept that at this point. But in a way this is kind of the underlying point of the topic.

That's why I want to know what it actually takes to convince someone who already has a stance against it someone who actually does need to convinced by the s*** I've been hearing all my life. How much sense does it actually have to make? How easily will people just agree to suspend critical thought about this like my sister did? am I just mistaken and really most people don't even give a s***? How much of a s*** do they give? Is it even possible to be persuaded by this logically? Is even necessary to do so to get you to buy in?

So far, yeah. It seems this s*** is as unconvincing to people with the same concerns as it is to me. I guess that's nice. I don't know.

it's not that he doesn't respect religion that's grating. It's not even really the vitriol. There's just something about the overall tone and demeanor that foreshadows how conversations are going to go, and how exhausting they might end up being.

So, since it's not the lack of respect or the vitriol or anything concrete, you justify it by saying it's something vague that you can't adequately explain but is totally justified.

A big reason why I stopped visiting this board is because of certain users (several in this topic, atheists and theists alike) who have been here so goddamn long and have seen all the conversations that they get tired of retreading any old topics and try to stifle any conversation they aren't personally interested in and police any conversation they are interested in, which probably plays a big part in this board losing so much traffic.

Not only that, but I constantly see people write posts that are completely ignored, only to see board regulars write basically the same thing and all the other regulars to hang off their every word, even if it's something they disagree with. I'm constantly seeing other atheists completely ignored in favor of kozlo or Hustle Kong saying the exact same thing, even when they're the ones who post after. And they're so "polite" that everyone else lets them police the board.

I recently started browsing again, very casually, and I'm still seeing this nonsense. And it's not just kozlo and Hustle Kong. A lot of theists on this board seem to defer to them on most conversation topics, and attempts at conversation by anyone else get stifled out and topics just turn into conversations between the same few board regulars who only allow the kinds of conversations they want to talk about (which usually ends up being the same thing over and over again).

That’s a pretty apt metaphor, Kozlo.

Now how about you finally get around to that whole "not participating in my topic" thing you've been saying in my topic for a long time now.

I wasn’t interested in participating in the original topic. I was interested in responding to Kozlo’s post, which is why I did precisely that.

Holy s***, thanks for proving my point!

I feel ya, bro. It's why I barely post here anymore. It's been the same group of people c-j-ing each other for damn near 10 years

You’re welcome? I would have been completely happy to read the topic and not comment. A user made a specific post that applied to me. So I commented on that point. Then another user referenced my post, so I replied to that. That’s how conversation works, isn’t it?

And here's more of that utterly bulls*** false modesty. You love and it you know it. That's why you're constantly on this board. That's why you responded within minutes of my criticism. You don't want anyone to think it's true even though it totally is.

Yes, this is a perfect example of you and certain others hijacking topics and making them all about yourselves.

There’s nothing false about it. I only consider myself fairly knowledgeable about a very limited number of subject. Like Arcade sticks.

I’m “constantly on this board” because I have a general interest in the subject. And I have a telephone that lets me browse this board pretty easily. I also regularly check the Splatoon subreddit, and I am unknown there. It has nothing to do with self-love.

And I responded within minutes to your criticism because I happened to check this board (as well as the Forum, which is my other GF board I check regularly) at the same time.

Like a fairly large number of people, if someone says something to or about me, I’m going to respond when I see it if it is convenient to do so. I don’t mind anyone knowing that.

What are you doing, if not contributing to the very problems that supposedly kept you away?
