I'm at the abandoned fortress in World 7 and have 98 lives right now. What happens if I run through it again and get to 100?
Does the odometer flip over and keep going? Does it go back to 1? Does it just max out at 99?

It maxes out at 99.

Technically you can still play even when the counter indicates 0, so 99 means you have 100 lives. That's the maximum; any more extra lives you collect are discarded.(NES version)

However, in the All-Stars version '0 lives' does not exist, so while it maxes out at 99 lives as well, you really do have 99 lives and not 100 in that case.
Simply put, Ash in the Pokemon anime does NOT deserve to be Pokemon Master. He needs lessons on which Pokemon are strong and which are just pets. 'Nuff said.

It's one of those little differences you'd find in video games.

Either it's a "extra life" count, where it counts how many extra lives you have, thus your last life would display as "0" or "no extra lives remaining"

Or it displays as a "life" count, where it counts how many lives you have, thus "1 life remaining" would be your last one.

Thanks.
I'm playing on the Wii's VC, so it's the NES version. I was worried it was like doing the infinite lives trick in SMB 1, where if you get too many it flips over, you die and it's game over. Good to know that's not the case.

^That can still happen but you have to do a glitch that gives you like... I think it gave over 70 lives at once. If you went over 127 or 128 you just disappear. It can only happen in a 2 player game, you need a certain battle stage.

I didn't know about this. I guess you mean that one trick in level 3 where you bounce the turtle shells off the steps. I was never able to pull that one off.
