I've only just started the game (haven't met Elizabeth yet, but just made it to Monument Island) but are Vigors explained at all? In Bioshock 1, Plasmids are actually part of the storyline and come from sea slugs if I remember correctly, but in Infinite, they just appear as something anyone can use. I find it funny when Booker gets a new Vigor bottle is like "So what does this do? Might as well drink it". The dude is such an alcoholic, drinking whiskey in the heat of battle lol.

Snake oil. It's all a scam. Good for grout, though.

one of the major characters, like the Columbian equivalent of Tesla (Fink? I can't remember) invented them i believe. I'm not very far so I probably don't know what I'm talking about.

And it seems like anyone can get them, but not really because Columbia is mostly comprised of Pilgrims and middle class people, and the Vigors and Vigor Aids cost a buttload of silver. That's just speculation too though.

Just in case the TC doesn't get the reference:

The vigors are meant to mirror the various health tonics sold in America around the turn of the century. These were later called "snake oil", to describe them as a scam. They offered health benefits, but were just sugar water (placebo), or a thrown-together mixture of drugs and herbs that were sometimes harmful.

In Columbia, the tonics actually work and give you magic powers.

They don't have the same tie-in to the story as Plasmids did in the fall of Rapture, in that Columbia has bigger problems than Vigors. The arms race of Vigors does have an effect on the Founders/Vox war, but it isn't the main factor like Plasmids were.
If you don't believe in myths, fairy tales, ghosts, and zombie resurrections, and are 100% proud of this, put this in your sig.

*Spoilers to where Vigors come from*

Its incredibly easy to miss the explanation for them. You find one of those audio recordings that fink leaves behind right next to a tear in which music from the "future" is coming out of in a room full of a instruments. It's a message he left for I believe his brother (could be wrong on that), in which he says how if this portal(tear) gives you musical inspiration" to go from which is as good as the stuff i'm getting from this biologist to make these vigors, you can be remember as the mozart of this generation. So basically he is being told how to made them from a biologist from another dimension/universe/reality whatever you wanna call it.

Having just finished the game and then reading this topic, I'm drawing huge parallels to Fringe.

Fink stole the concept from Rapture after discovering the tear that leads to that timeline. He then passed it off as his own creation.
