I prefer a combination of possession and a distant Sparda relative. It would explain why he has the Sparda blood, and also why Vergil's "soul" (or whatever) might be drawn and possess his arm in his vie for power.

Well, it could have been an accident. When the hell's gate opened for demons to attack Fortuna, Vergil could have rushed out of it looking for just about anybody to possess. And if you absolutely HAVE to possess a human in order to escape the demon world and be able to walk the earth again as something more than just a spirit, you might at least pick the one with white hair, stylish coat and a huge ass internal combustion sword.

Though Credo would have been the second best option. Bet that's why he's so irritated at Nero after the first mission.
Besides I or anyone else was flamming anyone.

I always liked to associate him with Sparda due to the red and blue jacket.

Also, I always felt the opening was foreshadowing something in relation to Sparda. (I always felt that the shadow of Nero holding a scarecrow's blade was to resemble Nero holding the Sparda sword.)

I vote reincarnation or...

A failed Sparda clone by Mundus? (Would be interesting if Mundus ever returns in a new DMC)

Descendant of Sparda makes the most sense lol.

My theory.

Vergil's wondering broken soul was attracted to Nero because of this and took possession of his arm.

Vergil souls other half was in the Yamato which is why it couldn't be fixed with out Nero.

Then again, being possessed wouldn't give him Sparda's blood. Sanctus said he had Sparda's blood

Best explanation: Nero is a dream that Dante had, because he eventually thinks about Vergil.

So, he wakes up and we see the real hero is Dante and he'll always be. His shop is called Devils Never Cry and we're ready to go.

Which is why he's both possessed and a distant descendent of Sparda.

That depends. Some mythos (like Hellsing) believe the soul is contained in the blood. If Nero were possessed by Vergil's soul, it's not impossible that his blood would mutate to resemble Vergil's, and by extension Sparda.

It's a stretch, but it fits.

Meh, I wish that they would just change the time gap and say that Dante's really 36 in DMC4 so it would be alright for Vergil to be Nero's dad, but I'm not gonna hold my breath on Capcom changing the timeline, so IMO the best theory would be a Vergil clone.

The clone theory is the one that probably is least likely as well as the stupidest theory..
