If you seriously have to explain to someone why being the lowest selling game in a series is a bad thing then it's probably not worth it to waste the time to explain it to them in the first place.
Unless you like arguing with illogical people for an endless amount of pages.
Changing the expected sales doesn't lower the game's budget so from a financial standpoint it's still a loss. Changing the expected sales is more or less just a way to lower the goal post and claim victory in the face of the public where there is none.
