I'm new to the resident evil series, is there any particular game or games that I should play from the series to get a better understanding of RE6's story, or can it pretty much stand on its own?

2 annd 5 would be best to understand the characters and story
The dance of battle is strange and brief. This battle with you has been, well, strangely brief.

You never have to play another game in the series to understand an individual one.
Before you die you see the Tails Doll---Backdrop Observer of the Metroid: Other M board
Apparently Edward: Wise Old Sage of Korodai

So is there any way I can play RE2 without buying it on eBay? And is the game really outdated or is the gameplay fine?

How do you define outdated?

Also RE6 is really the start of a whole lot of new stuff and probably does not really need much series history to get along fine with it.

It depends on your tolerance of old school gameplay. There's little to no hand holding, And it's very possible to screw up to the point that the game will be near unbeatable. But it's a fun game with a great atmosphere.

Also you can get it on PSN.

Well I can tolerate most really old games, but I'm new to the series so I'm wondering on which games to start off and play in general. And I can't play every game in the series financially, so maybe 3-4 games max not including RE6. Characters and story are important to me so I don't want to just jump into RE6 knowing nothing.

They aren't expensive. You said 3-4 will if you pick 4 then I would go with

RE1,RE2, RE:Code Veronica, RE5

3 and 4 are good and I would recommend them if you get the fund but they're the least important in the overall plot.
