I prefer the second option. Limited saves are annoying. Challenging, but annoying.

I know how quick-saving can potentially break a game, since you can save or load from any state but with how there are less and less time to play games these days, it's actually kind of a necessity.

With all these smartphones appearing in recent RE games, I guess an auto-save makes a lot of sense story-wise, since you have a device on the go.

Ink ribbon typewriters would really be out of place.

I wonder if typewriters will make a cameo one day and the character will comment on it if you interact with it.

Auto saving. Sorry, it's just the way of things. I still respect save points, but that's not what I want nowadays.

(Q) Whats the difference between a hacker and a booster? (A) They both use different unlegit methods to achieve the same goal.

Save points with a limitation to them actually make for a good challenge in survival horror. It's a shame that they don't catch on anymore, but to be fair they really only work for the hardcore. Remember the challenges to not save at all when going through a game? Those were intense.
RE3 had unlimited ink ribbons for those playing on an easier mode. I actually liked that about RE3. You could have limited saves on harder difficulties if you wanted the challenge.

Between auto-save and unlimited saves though I would go with unlimited saves. RE4 did this quite well. I could save and go to certain sections of a game that I would love to play through once again without starting a chapter over. That's why I prefer the saving system in Dead space 1 and 2 over the auto save of Dead Space 3. But given the online co-op features of RE5, RE6 and DS3 it's understandable why these games would have a checkpoint save system in place.

It's a means to that end. It's where you'd see in in single player experiences like Silent Hill Downpour or Resident Evil Revelations that I take an issue with. Especially when they don't give you an option to go back to past a certain point which The Last of Us, DS3 and current RE games can do.
I want it all.

Auto saving. Sorry, it's just the way of things.

I like save points because I can quickly save progress if I need to leave or run an errand.
For auto-saving, I will need to reach the next checkpoint but I don't know how long and even if I did, the obstacles ahead might take a lot of time.

Quick-saving is the best for this.

I feel the opposite way. One thing I hated when I was playing the older REs was when I had to do something and I had to go find a typewriter and waste an ink ribbon to quit. I liked save points though. It made me afraid of losing progress if I die getting there instead of being safe and saving on the spot.

The only old RE game I can play without using an Ink Ribbon is Code: VERONICA.

Never tried it out with the other games.
