I think its likely that the channeler in the Depths was researching the Gaping Dragon for Seathe. The Gaping Dragon was a mutated Dragon, so Seathe would definitely have some interest in it.

As for Kirk...I'm fond of the theory that he became a Darkwraith in order to gather humanity for Quelaan.
