there is no real story. Aliens invade you kill them.

You should play the first one though. It should be cheap by now and while the graphics aren't great it is one of the most mindlessly fun games out there.

The story in 2017:

Bugs - very large bugs - invade Earth. You must run around huge levels and survive wave after wave of these herds of people eating monsters, because you can't let them have their way. You will grind for weeks for the Lysander Z which makes victory at least possible. Then you will suffer brain damage from the insane numbers and ridiculous nature of the challenge posed by the even larger robots, insects, and flying saucers that you face later.

The story in Insect Armageddon:

Bugs - very large bugs - invade Earth. While 2017 is happening, they also invade Detroit. You must run around huge levels and survive wave after wave of these herds of people eating monsters, because you can't let them have their way. You won't grind for weeks for the (insert weapon which makes victory at least possible) because now you'll be able to buy them from a list or they'll drop from bosses. Then you will suffer brain damage from the insane numbers and ridiculous nature of the challenge posed by the even larger robots, insects, and flying saucers that you face later.

In short... no, you don't need to play 2017. But I strongly recommend you do, as it will prepare your brain for the madness that is soon to beset it.

As all of these guys have said already - you won't need to play or even know anything about EDF 2017 to be able to jump right into this game without having to worry about missing out on plot/ story details.

Although, I guess I should point out that EDF 2017 isn't quite the original EDF game, though.

The original third person shooter EDF games developed by Sandlot were released on the PS2 as part of the Simple 2000 Series of budget games. There were two of them:

1st game: "The Chikyuu Boueigun " ("The Earth Defense Force") (Simple 2000 Series Volume 31 - released June 26, 2003 in Japan, then released again later as "Monster Attack" in Europe on February 27, 2004.)

2nd game: "The Chikyuu Boueigun 2" ("The Earth Defense Force 2") (Simple 2000 Series Volume 81 - released July 28, 2005 in Japan, then released again later as "Global Defense Force" in Europe on June 29, 2007.)

Likewise, you don't need to have played either of those games to be able to jump right into EDFIA, or to be able to get into EDF 2017, for that matter.

Earth Defense Force 2017 was the 3rd EDF game developed/ released by Sandlot (the first for the Xbox 360 - which is why many people think it's the original EDF game).

EDF 2017 is actually more of an up-res'd / slightly revised port of the the first game (Monster Attack) with a few elements of the 2nd game added in, as well.

All three games play pretty much exactly the same with the exact same controls (other than the flying/ jet-pack controlled female character "Palewing" from the 2nd game). They also all share nearly the exact same super simplistic storyline/ mission design elements , the same graphical look and animations, many of the same types of levels, most of the same sound effects and vehicles, etc, etc.

The biggest differences between the three games are found with the weapon and enemy varieties in each of them (but even there the games aren't that much different from one another, either, with the exception of Palewing's energy-blast based weapons).

Basically - in the past 3 games you played as the main EDF soldier character "Storm 1" leading a group of other EDF soldiers into battle against the evil alien invaders called "the Ravager's".

Now, in this game, you'll play as "Lightning Alpha" (essentially the American version of Storm 1). I think it's supposed to be that this game's story is taking place at the same time as the EDF 2017 storyline, just happening in different locations on Earth (USA/ Detroit instead of Japan- even though that doesn't really make sense within the context of the the EDF 2017 story? But again - story is such a backseat issue in these games that it doesn't matter much at all.)

If you've ever seen old sci-fi alien invasion/ Giant irradiated monster-of-the-week type movies from the 50's-70's, then you'll know what to expect here as far as the simplicity of the plot/ story line is concerned (The EDF name and some of the plot is actually taken from the 1957 Japanese film : "Chikyû Bôeigun" (Earth Defense Force) which was called "The Mysterians" in North America).

Also, you can take a look at MaloVolpe's EDF wiki for more info on EDF 2017 and this game, if you want:

Gamefaqs (the user): I love you. You're not afraid to write a long, articulate post. And you're aware of such an old film, too.

Here's a trailer, and I must agree, it looks a hell of a lot like EDF lol. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHbL8a71Hoo

I agree with all of the above, to add one more reason to play edf 2017, in one of the previews itwas stated that edf:IA will try to referance 2017, at least a few times. So if you want to get in on the in-jokes 2017 wil be required.
