I haven't found a single slime so far in my new 1.8 world. I have explored a swamp biome a lot (not during a new moon) and also I have dug out an area of 4 chunks and according to AMIDST, 3 of them are slime chunks. The area I have dug out is at level 33 which is less than 40 so slimes should be spawning.

There was a bug in 1.7.4 that mobs wouldn't spawn if the render distance was less than 10 chunks. I only render 6 chunks because I only have a laptop and it gets too hot if I have the graphics/lighting/rendering etc too high. I think the bug has been fixed because mobs are spawning seemingly normally in 1.8 so I don't think that has anything to do with it.
Whoever said the pen is mightier than the sword has obviously never encountered automatic weapons.

I noticed I rarely get slimes in my double slime chunck farm anymore. Did some digging after reading your post. Here's what I found :

14w20a Slime sizing was moved to a post-spawn method. Originally the slime's canSpawn() method would report spawnability based on the initial size, but now a secondary check was added which reports spawnibility based on the final size. NOTE: This introduced a new bug (involving making the rarity check multiple times) which made slimes ultra rare again.

I hope they fix it soon :-(
I wanted to convert my slime farm into a xp farm since I'm already swimming in slime balls lol

Do torches affect slime spawns? I just finished carving out a 50x50x3 room, but I've only had 3 big slimes spawn so far. I probably should've done some checking if I was in a good place for my room first, but I got lucky in that it can spawn slimes. I'll probably end up digging out one more layer to make it 4 high, but for now, I'm just wondering if I should switch my torches with jack o lanterns in the floor.

Slime spawning is not affected by light levels.

I know light levels don't matter, just wondering if a torch on the floor could prevent spawns.

Yes, torches aren't air blocks so they will disrupt spawns. Use jack o lanterns/glowstone in the floor.
Why? Because **** you is why.

I got my pumpkin lanterns installed, but it didn't seem to help too much. Maybe nearby cavities are sucking up all of the monster spawns, or maybe my room is barely in the slime chunk.

If it's just a large flat room then you can't expect all that much. If you want an efficient slime farm, you ought to build multiple layers...4-5 layers will drastically increase the number of spawning spaces in your farm, so you can expect to have a lot more slimes spawning on average.

If you want a really efficient one, then you'll need to light up all the caves and surface area within 128 blocks of your farm. Big job, maybe not one you want to do if it's just slime balls/blocks you need.

I've been thinking of increasing the number of floors. This one has me standing on level 15, so there's plenty of room above to make some more, just a ton of blocks to excavate. On the bright side, I'd get a lot of stone blocks to build a castle finally. lol
