I read all these posts saying if you do some quest for nocturnal she lets you keep it but its all really vague. How exactly do I keep it?

Well I just finished the Thieves Guild Quest where you...**Spoilers**

Track down Mercer Frey, and when you finally kill him you loot the skeleton key from his body then escape the ruins. Then, the next thing you're supposed to do is go to the Twilight Sepulcher to return the Skeleton Key to its resting place. Just simply stop there and don't go. You will be able to use the skeleton key on any locked chest you come across.

That's what I'm doing now ;) I'm saving that quest until I'm finished with like EVERY other quest that way my lockpicking will be super high by the time I get rid of the key XD

It really pointless unless you like collecting things that are pointless, get my point. lol

Anyway check your lockpicking tree, minor spoiler:

when maxed there is a skill that makes it so lock picks don't break.

true, but if you keep the skeleton key, you can save yourself a bunch of perks to use on other stuff. not exactly pointless.

Exactly. Hell, the in house fence sells 30 picks at a time. I'd buy those out, unload some of my stolen goods, and restock her by waiting until I was out of things to sell.
