Because man... some enemies are ROUGH.

Giants could one-shot me at level 5, Saber Tooth cats can rip you a new anus, and I don't remember the last time I actually feared an enemy in a video game as I do with the dragons.

So yeah, is that the default difficulty? Or did I accidently change it without noticing?

Adept is considered "normal". There are two difficulties lower and two higher. It's already been stated that enemies have varying levels this time instead of always being the same as you like in Oblivion, and Giants are a huge "no-no" until later on.

It's a difficulty option, really doesn't matter what the default is, just pick what you want the difficulty to be.

But yes, it is the default I believe.

Has little to do with the difficulty setting.

Some enemies are within specific level ranges. So that Giant could be level 30, while you're level 5 or so. He'll naturally squish you.

Of course, you can still beat him. Just keep dodging his attacks until he dies.

Though it's really not worth the trouble to take all that effort and risk to kill something when it's that higher than you.

Giants will force you to go back to Starfox 64 if you try to beat them too early. DO A BARREL ROLL!!

But seriously, stay away from them until later. Dragons are intensely hard as well. Before you start the main quest, level up to four and start getting some decent gear. THEN you can begin fighting Dragons. Giants are still a no no until way later.
