Never played a Persona game before so if I buy this one will I understand it?

It shouldn't be a problem.
I'm clever, vaguely feminine, a vampire, and I wield Dice. PH33R.
The 3DS and PSVita are both outstanding systems. Wally the Equality Weasel says so.

It is it's own story. I played it without playing any of them and I was fine. I'm 35 hours into Persona 3 now and so far there has just been a cameo or two tying them together.

Persona 3 & 4 only share samekind of battle system, persona fusion and name. Other than that they are different games. Just like Final fantasy games there are no sequels or prequels. You don't need to know nothing about p4 except that its really good game.

It shouldn't be a problem if you haven't played any of the games in the series. The storyline is not connected to the other games although you will see some cameos from the other games but it wont be a problem.

No problems. In fact, P4G is a pretty good place to start with the Persona games - since it's probably the most refined in the series in terms of smoothing out rough edges in the gameplay.

Persona 4 Arena
Persona 3 FES (The Answer)

but yeah, you're good TC. At one point you will visit a location from Persona 3 and it's kinda awesome if you're familiar with that stuff but it's definitely not mandatory.
