A G-period (some people have alarms set when the G-word appears in these topics so we try not to use it until it happens!) is triggered when someone, somewhere in the world kills the Ur. At this point everyone else can enter the chamber and face him in a near-death state, allowing others to get a kill. The longer the period goes, the easier he is to kill as he will appear with less and less health, but you don't want to leave it too late as once the period ends the next generation is born and your chance is gone. GP's have been known to last well over an hour and less than twenty minutes, so it's pot luck.
Pity rewards are given to those who've contributed some damage during a gen, but failed to get a kill. How much you get seems to depend on how much damage you've done, possibly in direct relation to how many rounds fought. So if you do 0.1 of a health bar in damage in a single round you'll likely get a decent award, but 0.1 damage over a number of rounds might not get you as much. (This is just a theory. No one really knows for sure on this.) The award will be shown to you the first time you enter the chamber after the GP for a gen you didn't kill has ended. It can include any of the holy Ur weapons, including the three offline drops, but not the hero masks or Abyssinal armour pieces.
