That being said, East in Terraria is actually towards the left
This assumes that the world in Terraria is Earth, or at least a planet that rotates the same way as Earth. If the game takes place on another planet that spins the opposite way (like Venus), the sun would rise in the West and set in the East.
Long version. Usually people think that east is to the right, because they assume that North is up. However in Terraria you cannot see North, because it is down (side from which you are looking from), where sun, of course, never shows up. South is up, so East in that case is to the left. Just rotate compass 180 degrees and you'll see how it is in Terraria.
Also. Did you know that, where sun it at the top, it is South? ^_^
