Like, can it use USB 3.0? All the new ones seem to use that rather than 2.0. Is there certain brands that work and others that don't? I'm thinking about buying one when I can find it for cheap.

u can use 3.0 up to 2 gb

USB 3.0 hard drives will work fine, although at USB 2.0 speeds.

But what about all of those people that bought 3TB drives in anticipation of using them with the Wii U? SOL?

If the HDD uses a single port for both data and power, then you should invest in a Y-cable.
