I think nsmbu was a step in the right direction for 2d mario. I don't see how 3d mario could be considered stale in any way. Galaxy 2 was the only 3d mario that was a sequel and even then it still had tons of fresh new ideas. If people dislike the mario franchise so much, stop buying the games. If a game sells well you are only encouraging them to keep making new games like because it sells. If no one bought it, then nintendo would try something new to garner interest. Personally I buy every mario title that sparks my interest, and I'm certain a lot of the folks on here bashing mario will still preorder the next main mario entry.
Apathetic since I don't care when.

Mario is slowly starting to show its staleness for me. However, i like the 3D Mario games more than the 2D Mario games now.

I think the 2D Mario is prob getting stale because the gameplay are too familiar and hasnt change much. Aside from occasional new powerups and mechanics. 3D Mario games all have different gameplays(plus settings) that makes them unique.

The 2D Mario games I thought were getting stale. The 3D ones, nope.
But then my friend convinced me to play Black Ops 2 with him.

same can be said for alot of games the only reason mario gets so much flak is cause he is over 25 years old and nintendo's mascot but until mario stops selling millions he isn't going anywhere. If mario changes too much then its not mario and the fans will get angry and nitnendos risks not selling millions.

We need Luigi to star in more games that don't involve saving his brother... like his adventure in the Waffle Kingdom in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door or something to that effect ;)

Yes. I have zero interest in the franchise anymore. Maybe they should try to shake things up a bit, instead of constantly playing it safe.
