Topic. Never really read much about it, but apparently it's pretty awesome. May consider getting it for the U, just wondering what it's all about.

Basically it's a Pokémon ripoff. When Pokémon and Digimon were popular there was also Monster Hunter. I believe there was an anime series at one point as well.

An excellent series of books by Larry Correia.
As long as you're in my house, you'll do what I do, and believe what I believe. So butter your bacon... and bacon up that sausage, boy.

Wrong, you are thinking about Monster Rancher. Monster Hunter is game where you kill big monsters make weapons from the monsters you kill and use them to kill bigger monsters.
If dot hack links comes out on the PS vita in the USA I will buy 3 PS vitas and eat 1, as long as pikachu brings enough ketchup!

Monster Hunter is something of an action RPG series by Capcom. You play as a warrior who hunts monsters as a profession. You have a large variety of weapons to use on enemies that are many, many times your size.

Not to mention Monster Rancher actually came BEFORE Pokemon. It just waited till much later to actually make an anime.

It's a game that consists almost entirely of "boss battles" in environments that essentially act as multi-part arenas. You take on a mission to hunt a monster, at which point you're transported to its habitat, you seek it out, and then you spend anywhere from five to fifty minutes trying to kill the damn thing so you can carve up its corpse and use its parts to make new weapons and armor to fight new monsters.

Gameplay is essentially like an action-RPG using Punch-Out logic. Because your attacks are relatively slow and deliberate (some detractors would say "clunky"), the focus is on making sure you know when and how to attack, whereas most games these days just have you unload on the enemy and just hit the "dodge" button whenever. The monsters themselves are pretty awesome, and there's a lot of them (compared to the average number of bosses in other games, anyway).

One thing that's worth noting is that it's not the easiest game in the world, and the demo is actually pretty terrible for newcomers. The learning curve isn't too steep, but you can't just be dropped off in the middle of a Lagombi fight and expect to win like the demo does.

Here's some gameplay against the series' trademark monster, Rathalos (the first three minutes are kinda slow-paced and have the player missing a lot of attacks, so I've skipped to the part after his tail gets chopped off): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WALi1nmONc&t=3m
Socran's Razor: "Never attribute to massive stupidity by someone else, what could be explained by a tiny bit of stupidity on your own part."
