Not to hijack this thread but is it possible to do that with Netflix as well? Guess I've never really looked.

There is a way to completely power off your gamepad while using the Pro controller (Or Wiimote), or watching Netflix.

For NETFLIX:

1- Launch the Netflix app
2- Pick your show/movie
3- Choose your settings (Language, subtitles, etc...)
4- Press play and immediately (While the Titles load, or while an intro/title cards are playing) after, walk away from your Wii U, UNTIL YOU LOSE THE CONNECTION to the Wii u console (A screen telling you have lost connection should appear on your gamepad).
5- Press and hold the power button (On the gamepad, of course) for like 6 seconds or until the gamepad turns completely off.
6- Go back to your TV and enjoy the show.

* If you want to pause or skip or whatever, you need to turn on the gamepad again, adjust whatever you want, and repeat steps 3,4,5 and 6)

To use only the Gamepad/Wiimote.

1- Start the game you want to play.
2- Pick your controller (Pro controller or Wiimote)
3- Before starting your gaming session (Actually starting to play the game), walk away from your console untile the gamepad loses the connection to the Wii U console.
4- Repeat steps 5 and 6 above ^

Yeah, it's a hassle to say the least, but at least it's doable. My guess is that Nintendo will eventually patch it eventually.
