When I pop in a game, a "preparing update" screen appears and it lasts forever.

I'm screwed, right?
Video games are awesome.

No pretty damn sure it's only for system updates and only when you are installing it.

If the thing can turn on and you can navigate apps and all that, it's not bricked.

What games was it? Games updates/patchesdo that. It did it with Black Ops 2 since there's a patch for it out now. Game updates don't do harm. System updates are the real issue, though it is ony a problem when you're installing it and then you interrupt the install.

The "update" seems to be downloading it from the Internet, so that may be why it's taking a while. It;s not installing from the disc.
