I think Nintendo did miss a serious selling point for NSMBU by not including a level editor and even online. They only release one iteration a console so throwing in a level editor wouldn't make any later entry obsolete.
Plus the thought of 4 player online racing through the maps too try get to the end first would be pretty fun. It's not a major selling point, but it could've easily been done.
And new art style, and new EVERYTHING. Only then would it not be as forgettable as the previous 2 NSMB games. The only one that mattered was the first. After that they really didnt need to stretch this out for 3 more games. Maybe 1 sequel, but 3? LAZY!!!
