You can use the Wii U gamepad as a steering Wheel. So why bother with a Wii steering wheel.
And yes, you can use the gamepad as a steering wheel on NfS.

Developers are afraid to use any peripherals that don't come packaged in with the system, for fear that some people might not own it and it would therefore sell less. Considering that everyone and their grandma (literally, in the latter case) owned a Wii and therefore a Wii remote, especially the people who would later buy a Wii U, this just proves how ridiculously prominent the notion is. That last part didn't have anything to do with your question, it's just something I want to get through to anyone who has said "the gamepad should have been optional". Because then it would never have even been an option.

You have absolutely no idea of what you are talking about: You can use all controllers on NfS: Wií U gamepad, Wii U Pro controller, Wii Wimote/nunchuck, Wii Classic Controller, Wii Steering Wheel. The same goes for Sonic Racing. and CoD. Exept for the wheels, of course.
