The buttons and d-pad feel a bit strange and somewhat too sensitive for the game, the select button is incredibly annoying to press during gameplay, and I frequently experience input lag. I know I can change the control scheme, but I honestly can't think of a control scheme superior to the default one.

And I also know I can use different controllers, but I already beat the game on the original Wii VC with a classic controller so I want to give the gamepad a shot. Any tips on how I can improve my experience would be cool.

Why didn't you just remap the select button to one of the face buttons?

You shut down what we were going to suggest. Stop being a stubborn baby and just remap the buttons.
