http://www.dualshockers.com/2013/08/04/nintendo-and-the-wii-u-may-be-in-trouble-due-to-closure-of-vital-semiconductor-factory/

Summary:
- Renesas (the company who makes the eDRAM) is in horrible financial shape

- the factory where the eDRAM is made is largely sitting idle, and bleeding money, will be shut down in 2-3 years

- it will be extremely difficult to switch to a new manufacturer, if not impossible

- Wii U eDRAM will likely have to be redesigned

- cost of Wii U production is going to increase dramatically

Will this give Nintendo a good excuse to discontinue Wii U in 2016 and launch a new system? Gamecube also had a 4 year lifespan.

NEC already bought them and they're the ones closing the factory.

And I don't think you understand just how insanely expensive semiconductor manufacturing plants are. Buying a money-losing factory, just to make one component for their money-losing console, WOULD sink them.

It's not gonna happen.

Or maybe Nintendo is the only reason they are still open. ..

It's not that. The eDRAM is probably the most advanced component in the Wii U.

The problem is, this factory was spending over half their output just to create eDRAM for Nintendo. Now they are mostly sitting idle thanks to abysmal Wii U sales.
