Is it just me or is the Super Mario series not that good by platform standards?

Take Mario Galaxy for example:

1) There isn't really much to collect besides the Stars, thus little reason to actually explore. Cool, I went through all that trouble to find.... Some Star Bits and maybe a 1Up, which the game literally throws at you as soon as you start the game up?

2) The difficulty just isn't there.

3) Ultra short levels with not much reason to explore and the "secrets" that are hidden are overly obvious.

4) The very few unlockables (Granf Finale Galaxy, 9999 Star Bits) are pretty lame.
They called you exotic. Which is just people talk for awesome. Which you are.

Exploration isn't necessary to a platformer you know...

1. Well the mainline Mario games were never really about exploration, they were pretty linear in what you had to do, they just gave you different options of how to get there usually.
2. beating the game is usually pretty easy. 100%ing it? lolno
3. Eh, that's up for debate. You make it sound like its easy to 100% it in the first go.
4. That's subjective too. Ridiculously difficult levels are good for me. As are being able to play as Luigi and beat the game again.

Yes, it's a crappy game, that's why it only sold a little more than 12 M copies.

IMO Mario has had its ups and downs. I wouldn't consider any of the following to be particularly good:

Super Mario Bros 2J (The lost levels)
Super Mario Sunshine
New Super Mario Bros
Super Mario Galaxy
New Super Mario Bros 2

The rest run the gamut from decent to excellent. - My backloggery - My novel, updates weekly

I prefer Mario being a simple, run to the goal kind of game, so Galaxy was great for me. If you prefer the more collectathon kind of platformer I can understand your disappointment, and I would recommend the Donkey Kong series for that kind of thing.

While I think Donkey Kong and (modern) 2D Rayman are better, I still think Mario is top-notch.
Now Playing:DKC:Tropical Freeze, Wind Waker HD, Shovel Knight, Guacamelee, Bit.Trip.Runner 2

Well, you're right about Galaxy, it really isn't a good game.

But the Mario series does have a share of really enjoyable platformers that do a swell job of defining the genre.

but it's incredibly great to have. it expands on the level design by giving you alternate routes (sonic) or to hide cool, meaningful secrets (DK/Kirby) Support Chrom for smash 4 DLC!
