So I'm planning to play some old gamecube games on my original Wii, but I'm missing a controller. Will the Smash Bros gamecube controller work on a regular Wii for gamecube games?

Thanks a bunch

Yes. Internally it’s exactly like all official gamecube controllers, it’s only the exterior that slightly different.
Rest in peace, beloved Wii Shop Channel.

And the cord is 10 feet long instead of the usual 6.5 feet.

Just make sure you're getting an actual Gamecube controller and not the Smash Bros. themed "fight pads" that are actually just Wii Classic Controllers that are shaped like Gamecube controllers.

Just for reference, you want this:
https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Super-Smash-Classic-Gamecube-Controller/dp/B00O9GW8VK

And NOT this:
https://www.amazon.com/PDP-Wired-Fight-Pad-nintendo-u/dp/B00LSBNSJA

Oddly enough, there were also officially licensed Hori produced GCN styled Classic Controllers from the same time period as those PDP controllers, so make sure you avoid those as well.

The Hori controller is great on a Wii U without GameCube controller ports and I happily bought mine after missing my Wavebird when I transferred my N64 downloads to the Wii U, but it's equally as useless on an actual GameCube or for GCN games on a backwards compatible Wii.

It is an official Gamecube controller; it just has the Smash Bros logo on it. So they will work with your Wii and Gamecube flawlessly.
