My friend at boarding school is insanely good at Mario. He destroys me whenever he grabs me (I play Captain Falcon) with countless up tilts and up airs, his bair and dair are extremely hard to punish with almost no landing lag, his recovery is super hard to gimp due to the cape and his stage spike potential, and he has a great approach with his fireballs and low lag aerials and grab and everything.

Mario has two problems - lack of range and the fact he doesn't have (reliable) kill set-ups. Problem is Captain Falcon doesn't really outrange Mario much if at all and he has to get in Mario's face to kill, and you being in his face is how he kills you. So for Falcon it's a pretty hard but not unwinnable matchup. I'm not a big Falcon player so a lot of this is more general vs. Mario advice.

Mostly you want to do anything you can to avoid being grabbed. Falcon is bait & punish and what you want to do is capitalize on mistakes Mario makes in trying to damage you. Try to avoid anything that can lead into grab, like if you end up shielding a Dair or a fireball do something about it preferably immediately. You want to abuse tiny gaps Mario leaves inbetween his buttons since although it IS hard to punish him, it's not impossible.

For how you avoid getting killed, watch out for Usmash obviously, and grab avoiding is still important because of his Bthrow and he can also do things like bait an air dodge and Fair you to kill you at %s way earlier. Fair in general is something you should generally have an answer to everytime he does it because Falcon gets killed ridiculously early by it since he's a fast faller with bad recovery. Teching is also super important - if you get hit by like, the weak hit of Nair, if you don't tech this can be your doom right then and there.

Generally because Falcon is combo food with bad frame data outside of jab, if you get put into disadvantage you're f***ed. Bait, punish, outrange, DI - just do anything you can to ensure you don't get hit by a combo starter, and Falcon's off-stage vs. Mario is obviously pretty bad.

falcon against mario in general is just hell for falcon, I would recommend picking up a secondary for him, sonic, marth, corrin, cloud, rosa, hell even luigi may work.
Pokemon Breeder, Trader, Collector. All my shinies for trade are here: https://tinyurl.com/y74bs544

Hell no. That would be even worse. You'll never get back to the stage due to side special and Fox gets comboed just as hard if not harder.

You should make more use of Falcon's dash dancing. That Mario had you read like a book the first ~70% of the 1st stock. Dash dancing and feinting can potentially force that Mario to overpursue, leaving you with an opening to counter.

Also, you may want to ease up on your rolling. After you got combo'ed or knocked helpless, you would roll away from Mario (which sadly always put you towards the ledge). In my experience that's the most expected reaction aside from grabbing/getup attack. You also made sure to get up right away, instead of delaying your roll to see what Mario would do.

That's just a couple things that stood out to me. I hope I was helpful.

@Fysher

it is very helpful, thanks a bunch! less rolls and implemention of dash dancing, yeah

that dude definitely put me out of my confort zone, i'm not usually that defensive but, after getting my ass kicked a few times, i started being more defensive
