Neither of those, exactly. I prefer not to play with items on, but I don't care how many characters there are.

Party game, I like screwing around and Super Sudden Death with many lives alot more than 1 on 1

I don't see why anything other 1v1 immediately disqualifies it as a fighting game.

Neither: I may be a 4 player no item mash fest on whatever stage, it may be a gimmick battle (all explosives, for example) regardless of the number of players, or anything else. Sometimes there'll be a competitive battle of 1v1 on whichever stage the two players decide on, usually no items. So while the fighting isn't as technical as some fighting games, it can easily be both (though I'd argue Melee had more mechanics that allow this).
