Nintendo will send out a update every week through spotpass we haven't gotten one yet because the game just came out but should be getting one soon.

Right now its at 36 billion according to the lastest one in Japan.

they should divide total coins by copies sold and post how close we are to having EVERYONE reach a million.

Except to Nintendo, a copy is "sold" once it's in a retail store. And many players will never take their copy on-line to add to that collective total.

It wouldn't look very impressive if Nintendo had to announce that the average coin-per-copy count was about 43. :)
