Are the newer games (XIII, XII etc) taking themselves too seriously? Personally I think the last few titles are not funny or witty and are sometimes too dramatic. Do we need another FF9 to lighten up the series? :)
Then again, I've always been more a fan of games that don't, (Tales to name a series) so I tend to prefer the Final Fantasies that aren't so serious.
Like FFV. loved it
But I am cool with a mix of both. I felt FFVIII wasn't overall too serious just cause of how Squall's character clashed with pretty much everybody he met. These people that clearly annoyed him and seem to exist just to bug him sometimes gave it a funny feel
I'll eat a sock if VersusXIII is actually a mind blowing game. -PainsPerception
I always see FFV as the Tales of the series. It's very light-hearted and not intended to be taken seriously. I think FFIV meant to be serious too but all the fake death makes it hard to take it seriously. If anything it brought the story down.
I feel that FFVI, VII, and IX had the right balance. They had silly moments and very serious moments.
